Exactely what does the air pump on a clubbie do and how do you remove it? I want to pull one off my clubbie and my Mercedes...

It pumps air into the exhaust to dilute the concentration of pollutants coming out the exhaust pipe enabling the cars to pass emissions tests.

They come off easily and all you really need to do is blank off the holes in the head. If WA has annual inspections you could be in trouble next time around.

EDIT: whoops, i must type too slow.

The used to inject air into the exhaust chamber on the head, the idea is that it would continue to allow unburnt emmisions to burn as they were in the exhaust pipe. Superflous really on a mini and always removed these days with threaded plugs put into the holes in the head or the head replaced.

If spotted though, the roadworthy mobs can technically hassle you over it's absence, goes for the merc too.

The idea is still around, My Yamaha R1 has this built into the head and exhaust manifold, but uses it's own pressure pulses somhow to do the same job.

Nah, no inspections in WA except when licensing after rego expires. I'll do the Mini after Rego but the Merc can go now, I think I'll take the belt off and see if it helps before going overboard!

Yeah, disconnecting the belt will help with the power loss that the pump causes. Its very quickly reversible too. Every mini I've ever seen in Tassie has had it all taken off, we don't ever have inspections unless the rego expires.

I've never seen a mini with an air pump in person, ALL have been removed, I've seen car's on here with them, but never in person.

What Merc? I got a yellow 230 1979 W123 model thing, well, my parents do but they never use it so it was donated to me and my brother. Comfy as car, slow as all hell though haha!!

mines a 280 w123 1980, running terribly needs new injectors, dizzy cap and spark plug leads, if you need parts order online out of the US - up to 70% cheaper!

You can always keep the pump, remove the belt and plug the pipes with a rivet. That way you still have all the gear on the car (except the belt)
It will look original.
It will look like it works (when it won't!)
It will be easier to get working if you ever have to pass a test.

I've always preferred a golf tee sawn off jammed in the pipe when blocking off emmissions control gear myself (of course I'm joking when I say I've done that, a law abiding citizen like me wouldn't dream of doing something illegal!!! )

Ahh I see, I'd love to have a 280 six cylinder, too bad my mum bought what was on the market at the time, a 230 4 cylinder, 3 speed auto, not good at all.

But it's the last of the carby models, runs a single big stromburg, runs nice (appart form the total lack of power), and is MEGA reliable, it's often said that the W123 was the best mercedes made, I agree.

Mines in the 300 thousand k's somewhere and has broken a speedo and a dash light. Retgulary maintaned by previous owner would account for a lot of this. :D

Mines about 120,000 k's, just needs the maintainance it should have had over the last 20 years, always had new oil etc but needs replacing the parts the should be changed out regularly. w123's are very prone to rust but uber reliable.

If you want to see an air pump still fitted from factory come to Hay and have a look at my LS. Its all still as it should be. I have noticed compared to Beefa that the LS uses a lot more fuel but feels not quite as powerful. If I wasn't fussy about the originality of my car I would have taken it off, or conned hubby into doing it anyway!

a smidge further than I- was planning to go his weekend (about 3500k's further!) but thanks for the offer. My feeling is that sometimes originlality can be overrated. As long as the parts can be replaced or reinstated all is good. My mini project is a sunshine and I hope to have it looking like factory new but runnning much better than new.

These Air pumps are only a Vane type pump, so what I have done in the past is leave them there but remove the Vanes from the pump and braze up the ends of the tubes that feed the head. So it is just there for show. Like this it will not cause any power loss and Car will look original too. I was planing to do this to My LS 1275 to keep it original. Keeps the Transport inspectors happy too.
