hey all, is it possible to change the speedo cable while the motor is in the car?? is it easy or a pita?? i have to try it tomorrow, any tips hints tricks??? cheers jamie |

I did mine on the van, forgot whilst subframe / motor was out. Have the front of the car nice and high (safely) and do it from under the car. I thought it would be hard, but it was easy! |

Yes it can be done in the car. Lift the car high and safe. Be patient and use subby tools and small hands. Good luck |

Jim, Its a PITA, but put your arm through the drive shaft hole in the subframe and you should be able to get to it okay. If the old one is done up really tight and you cant get on it / to it with multigrips or something, a screwdriver and hammer to chisel it anticlockwise through the driveshaft hole in the subframe works a treat. Hello... I've had the luck of my cable snapping twice... On my car it's actually really easy... you reach with your right hand down between the radiator and the carb, past the extractors and you can actually get your whole hand around the speedo cable to get it off. I can do it in 30 secs with a threaded type speedo cable. No need to lift the car or any of that jazz. I have a maniflow lcb as well as a 1275 thermostat engine steady bracket and I can still get to it. Just make sure the engine is cold
CAVEAT: I have no mechanical fuel pump so this could be what is blocking the way for most people but I can't be sure (I'd have to be standing in front of the car to figure that one out). An additional feature of using electric fuel pump instead of mechanical

chong yours is easy as you have no tappet cover breather, being that yours is on the clutch housing. if you don't have twin SU's and a breather on your tappet cover, do it as chong said. If you do, under you go. Pot joint diffs are more difficult that S diffs, but it can be done and being that your car is a rebuilt car, it should be easy as it won't be covered in oil. matt van'74 you must be really small to be able to get your arm in there that way, us fat blokes have no chance of doing it that way

im the same as lilee. i have the breather on the tappet cover though. but i must admit it is a tight squeeze and takes a time to get it in the right spot. but i think i will be going from under the car next time |

Do it hot so you can bitch about it later on. Live on the edge. We've all done it at some stage, and the engine always seemed to be unavoidably hot for some reason. |

Hi Jamie, Just a small tip for you, i wrap some pvc tape around the end that goes on the speedo, just a couple of inches below the end of cable it stops the nut from running back down the cable, nothing worse than getting the bottom end on then go to do the easy end and find the nut has slid down the cable, a PITA!!! Colin. |

Ummm... Removing the radiator is the easyest/most comfortable way, i geuss. Sure, yo need to refill it... But... Hey! Afterwards you still have all yer fingers, your arm isn`t broken and you dind`t went crazy 
(Remove the radiator-hose at the waterpump helps as well) kind regards, Jan |
