Hi guys, I am going to look at a moke tommorow to see if its a bigblock. What kinda numbers should I be looking for on the engine? I have done a few searches but didnt find much. Thanks |

As a quick guide it should have an engine number with a 12 prefix if it's a moke 1275 , would also not have the inspection plates (cam follower covers)on the back of the motor but should look like this - 
There is alsso a possibility it could be fitted with a cooper s motor , someone else can give you the engine prefixes for them , I haven't had enough coffee yet to think that hard

Cooper S 1275 prefixes are 9F/Sa/Y and 9F/XE/Y. ALL other 1275 ones start with 12.

This is a slight tangent... I have a 9F/SA/Y motor, and it's got cam follow covers (as it should) and no hole to put mechanical fuel pump in, but there is one stud sticking, on a motor with a mech pump it would have the hole and two studs, but mine has no hole and only one stud. Why? I've seen other 'S' motors on here like that too. |

Yes, hmm that's not what I wanted to ask, sorry, should have worded it better. I meant whats the stud for? It seems pointless. |

I suspect that is a location dowel, put in as jigging for the machining operations. Cooper 997 block had the same I think. As said above, all Coopers, Ss (and Clubby GT) had an electric fuel pump. |

I have seen other blocks without a hole (but with the stud) use it for a breather pipe from the tappet cover that pointed down toward the road. Doesn't explain why they left it after they ceased using it for a breather pipe, except for maybe doc's reason above. |
