Greetings all.
I got myself another van the other day.

Its a Leyland, Non running, sat under the carport for the last couple of years, was going to do it up but never got to it, type of van.

Tryed to turn it over today but made an unfortunate discovery. A couple of the valves seem to be stuck open.

Question is, Is there any quick easy fix solutions for that or is it a head off take a look job?
Im thinking its more than likely a head off jobbie.
But if i didn't have to i would be happy.

when it's had that much water vapour/moisture sitting in there for so long, any attempt to run it will cause damage, guaranteed. I bet there's rust between the valves and guides.
Head off job. I suspect the head gasket was leaking that's why all the water vapour > caused corrosion. :wink:

What he (Doc) said - but you could try squirting diesel down the valve / valve guides with a fairly fine oil can or syringe. Let it stand for a day or two while repeating the application of the diesel.

Then give each of the offending valves a tap with a hammer on the top of the stem - take the rockers off first obviously - Do no - do not whack it hard, this is not a brute force thing - just a whack. The valve will give a sproing sound (best I can describe it) if it frees and a dull thunk sound if it doesn't. May save taking the head off but do not spin the engine with stuck valves.

Having said all that - probably if the valves have seized then if the head gasket hasn't blown it will probably will very soon.

Before you try to start the motor - change the oil - spin it up on the starter with the plugs out till you get oil pressure. Then plugs in and try and start it and just let it idle until you see oil seeping around the rockers.

Bottom line - if you cant turn the engine an entire revolution (or more) by hand then dont use the starter.

Hmm so what the general consencis is, Is that i probably shouldnt have already spent a while trying to turn it over before i realised there was a stuck valve.......
Ahh... yes....
Well i might be selling a rolling shell intead if a running project in the next few weeks....

Ok i think ill go with the head off option. If i havent killed it, I might be able to make one up out of the other head's ive got. If not, well there's another large paperweight in the shed
