ahoy there mateys, short and sweet this one, well kinda,
how hard is it to change a needle in a HIF carby?
If possible could some kind person write out the steps to how its done:)

Untighten 4 screws, replace needle and tighten 4 screws.

Remove the cacuumchamber on top (3 screws) and carefully take aout the piston with the needle (attention: oil inside ); do not bent the needle.

Remoce screw on piston.
And now: take out the needle. They`re pretty tight fittet, so patience and a little forceps may help (but please do not scratch or bent the needle).

And now you can easily change the needle, bolt it al together again and give your carby a new adjustment That`s it!

Yep thats about it...the only thing I will add is that when you are putting the Piston back in...it only goes in one way....Towards the filter side thier is a small bracket that lines the piston in the correct place.
Don;t forget to put the large spring on top of the Piston) back in also

If you are having trouble getting the needle out you can get a small piece of tubing such as a section of insulation from an electrical wire and slide it over the needle and up to the base. Then lever it out by gripping it with long-nose pliers and levering them against the face of the piston. Just be gentle and be careful that you don't bend or damage the needle or damage the piston.

I find this method works like a charm

Nice! I always wondered how to get the stuck ones out without damaging them. Cheers for the tip. Will try that.

Dont`t forget to ferill oil into the damper, then

Fill it up, screw the damper back in. Now put one or two fingers into the carb (yeah, moto-erotic! ) and press up the damper; but don`t forget to put a towl or so on top (oil squeezes out).

Or... erm... Dunno if the HIFs still have this little drill in the damper-cap..?


If you have the needle out, give the jet a bit attention.
Is it still round? Or a bit oval?
If oval: Replace it, it`s worn and will not allow correkt adjustment anymore (or in near future...).

hey guys, im stuck at this point, i cant for the life of me figure out how the needle comes out, It moves up and down about 5mm but feel like a spring is pushing it back HELP!!!!!!!!
oh and the screw on the side is out

Spray around needle with carby/throttle body cleaner.
Then get the hairdryer and warm the piston up. Or stick it in hot water.

Just "pump" aut the needle and the lill "locator".

Warming the Piston + a bit lubrication should help!
They sit pretty tight in the piston...

The whole "darker thing".
It keeps/holds the needle in position and comes out with the needle.

Like this: The thing that looks a bit like a hat is the upperside of the needle.

Spray the Wd in the scew hole and leave for a while..and stand it up so the needle is hanging down but not touching any thing. Try heating it up with the hair dryer as Dr has said...if that don't work try this then.

*update* This thing is stuck in there tighter than..........well somethign really tight. Ive tried heating with a hair dryer, spraying wd40 in the hole and letting it sit for hours, ive sworn at it with language that a 1 armed warfy would blush at and even tried coax it out with what i must say was a very creative interperative dance, <bad scotty from star trek accent> BUT SHE JUST WONT BUDGE CAPTAIN </bad scotty from star trek accent> Ive had to put it back in my car now as i need it to get me to work so next weekend ill have another go. During the week ill buy some carby cleaner and soak it in that before i try the heating and levering method again, OR would it be ok to place the needle into a mini vice (with rubber things on the grippy bits) and giving the piston bit a few light love taps with a rubber mallet or is that asking for disaster?
why must the simple things be soooo difficult!
