I was just looking at minis (no purpose, cant buy one yet), and was thinking, I'd like a mini with a bit of grunt. like a 1275+.
I was just looking at minis, and alot of them are 998 etc.
How would a healthy 998 price compared to a big bore engine?
If I was to buy a mini with a small engine, would it be worth taking the small engine out, selling it, and putting a big one in?

oh yes and they cost abit, if ur gonna do that juz buy a big block or a 998 0r 1100 with the disks already done and some mods

ud be suprises that the 998 and 1100 are more torque then the 1275 and if modded right can be abit quicker, uve seen mine in action already

I love small bores, and mine makes more power than my sunshine, and only get close in the torque figures.

a 1275 will always have more torque than a mostly standard ssmall bore.

when you work them they then get right up there.

BUT I love small bores and they go great if u mod them. but 95% out there are probably not anything special. they will go well enough and ur mini will still be good. in all my minis most have been small bores and i am lucky enough to have a 1293 now. but if i was looking for a mini i would not pass over a good one just because it was a small bore.

end or story is a 1275 will go better than a standard small bore. easy. a 1275 will go better than a slightly modded small bore. if u want to work ur small bore than go for it. if u want 'big' power just in a car thats for sale, then id go for a 1275..

but ull like ur mini even with a small bore that isnt worked. just put an exhaust and extractors on there and it will sound and feel fast, thats half the battle haha

Cass, if you are after 1275, 9/10 it will be more cost effective / less hassle to buy a car with a 1275 in it. A 998 will be smoother but have less grunt than a 1275. You won't have as much power but it should use less fuel.

I know it will need disc breaks. Current mini has a 1330... but its not my mini.

Reason I'm asking is that I've seen alot of nice small bore minis, that looks alright cost wise.
If it would be more cost effectife just to go straight for a 1275 or bigger then thats what I'll do.
Reason I want a big bore is because it will be my daily driver... and my daily driving will be mostly on the freeway - to and from work.

Depending on what you require really, power or economy for traveling. Personally I reckon a fair standard 1275 thats tuned properly would be better, certainly for the use it would currently get on the freeways. Ultimately Cass it's your decision and the debate of whats better then the other is as age old as Roundy vs. Clubby. I say when you find a mini that grabs you , grab it and treasure it.

change diff for freeway if ur drivin it all the time then u could use a 850

Yup, and I'd like as many facts/oppinions/other peoples experience as possible, so I can make an informed decision


So, this is the scenario.
I will be driving 160km a day, from my house on the central coast to rhodes. I will be doing this up to 5 times a week. but more likely only 2-3 times a week.
I want something that will cruise along comfortably.

With all that, what would you get?

1275 bored out and stroked to 1420cc with a few other bits nice cam should get to work in no time

large journal cranks are not as pleasant on the highway as the small ones. sitting on
110 id take my small bore over my 1293 any day, not that the big boy is rough, it just
feeels like it doesnt want to do anymore. whereas the 1.0l sits there really nice and smooth with no worries. both have a 3.44 difff too.

fuel is better on the smaller ones too Cass.

I know, just didnt want to list all the other small bores... because I dont know it, and thats just the way it came out in my head.

So Chris... are you talking roughness as in the feel off it when you're driving? Or is it tsometing that can be covered up by the stereo

no not roughness at all.... its more the feel of it. it just feels like its just not got more. (It does though) it just comes down to the fact that large journal cranks arent good for revving. so as ur sitting on 110 u really feel like u dont want to push it anymore, and when u back off its like the engine is givving u a gasp of relief. its got much heavier parts in there swinging around. the 1.0l on the other hand is a lot lighter (internally) and just doesnt mind to rev. I believe small journal 1275s are much the same as 998s for their ability to rev, but wouldnt know cos i dont own one.
