Post subject:  Competition Bump Stops
Hi guys,

I just got some new "Mini Spares" competition bump stops for my car today and are there any tricks for putting the bump stop together???? I.e. the base plate and the rubber itself????

I have rubber grease and have just been using brute force to try and get them together and no luck so far. Any little tricks any of you guys have used before to get them together??? (the littlest hole on the rubber has to go over the huge retaining bit on the actual bit of metal)

a kettle, a vice or vicegrips and lots of brutal swear words

Boil up some hot water, soak the bumpstops in there for a few minutes and start swearing

have to agree..boil the water and put them in for a while...also some soap on the rubber hole ans the metal section...
put the metal section in a vice and place the hole over the other and get all the kids out of the Garage :wink:

I hate those <Mod Edit> bumpstops. Stupid <Mod Edit> bumpstops. Why can't they <Mod Edit> do it at the <Mod Edit> factory, <Mod Edit> lazy <Mod Edit>.

Thanks guys - had to let off a bit of steam - wish I could say I had one done - I need to be fatter so I can put more weight into it - still trying.

Update:- I have one together - wooo hooo.

Got them together by boiling both the bracket and the bumpstop of the stove for 10min and then being quick when putting them together - all done with no grease :shock: :!:

Hope you fitted em right way up. :lol: The radius on rubber goes at top.... :wink:
And I'd put a block of wood under the drum then let the jack down- check the body flange doesn't cut the rubber. If it fouls, bend the flange out a bit with multigrips or vicegrips then touch up the underseal/paint.

Don't worry - fitted the right way up - made sure of it cause that's all I was asked when I was putting them together! Everyone was asking "Are you sure that's the way they go?".

I only did the one with out any lube - all the rest were lubed up to the max.

All done now - got it down to a fine art - did the last two (the fronts) in about 3 minutes!

How this was done:- lube up the bracket and place the whole lot in a G-clamp and tighten up the G-clamp (need two people - 1 to guide the rubber and one to turn and hold the clamp). Worked a treat!

I only use the rears now, I found the fronts sat the car too high and my 1/2 deg neg camber went to heaps positive... and stuffed the handling. :wink:

I was kinda thinking the same thing but I'm gonna try them anyway - I peered underneath today after I just pulled up and there is not much between the bump stop and the body - so I think at the height I like to run my car the same thing that happened to you may happen to me.

Doesn't worry my though - my rear ones are stuffed (will get around to posting a pic) and my front ones are fine.

You may also fine that the front maybe riding on the body as Mine were.
The front won't last 6 months and the handleing may not be as good. I found this out.
I only Use the rears now :wink:

I was told to put the fronts on but to cut them a bit shorter - though I think I cut them too short now.

Oh with a decent vice its real easy: Use rubber grease (or thick soap etc) on the rubber and just compress them together in the vice. It will fit together. Putting a thick bolt and nut through the holes and tightening slightly will also stop the bracket from "spreading its legs" and expanding in the vice.
