Post subject:  Engine prefix question.

Been offered an engine from a bloke at work, he's cleaning out his dads shed. It came from a mini which was totaled around 25years ago, brought home, stripped and good bits kept. Bloke at work can't remember too much about it, but the prefix is 9FC. I ain't no expert, I do have a lot of info here, but I can't identify this one, especially until I see it late next week.

Any ideas?

Rest of prefix fits, but I'll know more when I pick it up late next week, hell it aint even costing me anything.

Just how rare is this beast, and in reality, I don't think it'd be suited to the Moke.

Parnell's Cooper book lists the following prefixes for 970S motors-
9F/Sa/X
9FD/Sa/X
9FE/Sa/X

No 9FC that I can see....

Found ref to it in the Comp. Workshop Manual dated 1976 under Additional information for vehicles of UK manufacture.

9FC 970cc Cooper 'S'.

Now how the hell did this end up here? Got me hoping the info I've been given is right.

Measure the bore, if it's 70.6mm or bigger, and has 2 tappet covers on the back, it's an S engine of some sort..
If it measures less than say 67mm, it's a smallbore not an S.

Been some time, I do have the engine in question and it seems orig, I haven't pulled it down to check, complete with box and head. Got pressed metal tappet chest, sitting next to another engine in the garage it looks like it doesn't sit as high, the head is sitting lower than the 1275 on a box I've got here, what's the go with this?

I betcha it's 9FS or 9FX instead. Equally as good to grab.

Not so valuable if it's 99H however...

If the 2 heater outlet studs/holes at back of head are at an angle, it's an S- or at least the head is 1275 type of some sort.
If these 2 studs or holes are square to motor axis, it's a smallbore.

Heater studs are at an angle. Tried turning over by hand, no go, next weekend I'll lift the head and see what I've got in there.

Lifted the head this evening, it's big bore but the head I don't know the casting is AEG165 with what looks to be a 'primative' combustion chamber layout. No photos a camera is broken (thanks to missus again!)

Can't see whats stopping from turning over, bores look fine. I'll separate from the box tomorrow and check the bottom end.
