or put discs on and cure your lack of brakes problem at the same time

In my clubman the brake screws keep unadjusting and they have to get readjusted like once a month or more depends on how often i drive... its getting really anoying has anybody else had this happen.

Its the drum set up with two adjusting screws at front ??

How can i fix it, ive tried self tappers next to some but its too hard to get the screw in for all of them - not enough room

Did you read my post carefully - are you tightening the adjuster past the firts time it locks the brakes - are the brakes fully locked on and you can not wind the adjuster further before you back it off.

Then how far do you back it off.

Its not normal for adjusters to unwind and if they are then you need to find out why and fix that problem.

Discs are good - yes - and expensive but you need what you have now to work properly. I am not yet sure that the problem is not the way they are being adjusted.

Buy a adjusting screw kit... fixes the problem or put discs on and cure your lack of brakes problem at the same time

that may be the problem i am having at the moment, i've been driving on limited breaking capability for the last month, i am use to it now. one time i had to go up beside the car in front of me though cause they break suddenly about 30 meters ahead on a slight decline and well yeah. does make you drive a few more cars in front though. i'm just waiting till i get the discs put on, it keeps me motivated. (if i lived int he city i wouldn't recommend this though)

Andrew , you may think you're used to it but the million and one other things on the road (animals , people , children , whatever) aren't used to it , if you have bad brakes fix them asap , it's too easy to hit something , especially when idiots cut you off etc and if it's then found you had bad brakes you're up the proverbial creek in a barbed wire canoe wqith the insurance company . Do they need adjustment or is it something worse ? How long till you get your discs ?

To check if it is "unadjusting" by unwinding mark the adjusters and the backing plate once it is all adjusted up nicely. If you then go for a drive and the mark on your adjuster has moved, then you can say it is unwinding. the linings do wear and require adjustment periodically (and i have heard of many people adjusting as frequently as you), which is why they put the adjusters in there in the first place. If you run out of adjustment really early after putting new linings in, then you may have oversize drums for which you also need oversize linings. Adjustment of drum brakes is just one of the big differences between the joys of owning a mini and a modern car. Like brickworx said, if you don't like this particular joy the best solution is to change to discs. cheers michael

When you are adjusting mini brakes its important to have the car off the ground (at least the wheel you are adjusting) and make sure the wheel is properly locked before you wind the adjuster back. Often people just take the adjustment up till the first high point on the adjustment cam. The wheel feels locked but adjusting it that smidge further takes the cam to a flat and the wheel spins freely again. Brakes not adjusted properly. Make sure the brake adjustment cam is adjusted so that its fully locked before you back off the adjustment. If you cant get the wheels to lock then you have other problems as sports suggested.

When I was younger and tended to drive a bit more vigorously I used to have to adjust my drums at least every month. It was just wear. Now I don't, but I also have 8.4" 4 pots so I don't have to crawl around under there so much. Tim

yeah there definitely unwinding, and it seems to be getting worse - like needs adjusting bout once a fortnight. They are new linings like 8 months old or so, i just end up loosing brakes, and have to pump a few times before they work,until i jack it up off the ground and dad turns the screw until its full lock and then unwinds it a little and they only just rub (the linings and the hub), and then brakes are fine again - no problem. Just gets very annoying, and am sick of readjusting and ddint want to fork out $500+ for discs, just yet Brenton

Mike he's talking about the snail cams in 2LS front brakes I think. These DO unwind when the cams get loose in the backplate. I had to change a backplate once, but I think there's a repair kit for this problem now. somewhere out there...
