I've heard it said before but never looked into it,
but are english twin SU airboxes (ie. the standard twin su air filter box) the same size as Australian ones? I thought I heard the air filters were thinner..
I can't decide from the photos.

I've heard it said before but never looked into it, but are english twin SU airboxes (ie. the standard twin su air filter box) the same size as Australian ones? I thought I heard the air filters were thinner.. I can't decide from the photos.

Exactly the same - there was a slight difference in shape of the airbox between Mk1 and Mk11's but both interchange just fine. |

The actual filter elements vary in width, sometimes even the same brand will have about 5mm difference in width between them. 
The Mk1 does not have the cutout on the back corner (to clear the master cylinders on LHD cars) |

Thanks guys, What gets me in the phot is that the sticker is hard up between the top plate and the bottom of the airbox. The same goes for this other one on UK ebay that went off a little while back. I've got these same stickers purchased from the UK. 
I have a few images here and my memory serves me that the sticker is not that wide on the Oz ones. I've checked my old photographs as well and they do seem to be about 6mm thinner from eyesight. |

The brand new filter cases I bought from Mini Kingdom in the 80s had the Unipart sticker just like on the rough looking one. The good looking Coopers sticker would probably be what was on the car new. |

Nah, I haven't gotten one yet. It seems the original ones go for between 30 and 80 pounds stirling on UK EBAY. Add more for painted and ready to go. I have seen some bargains but post is the killer, varying between 20 and 40 pounds, so figure for 200 dollars and up for one from the UK if you are after one. The good stuff with the UK is that the peculiar wingnuts always seem to be available with them. They're never their with the Oz cans it seems. |

I have a couple of airboxes (not for sale - I might bequeath to my children as investment items) and yes they are missing the wing nuts. Midel SU in sydney cannot supply them either. Paul Gulson and others say its an easy fix. They say just cut a normal mini ones to the correct length and then drill and tap the thread. I havn't done that yet but one day I will wander up to a local engineering shop and have them make me a few. Another tip is to look on Ebay USA where dollar exchange and postage is better. They had lots of MG 1100's sold there which came with twin carbies and the correct airboxes. Thats where mine mostly came from. |

Yeah the fix is one I used for a lot of years, they work a treat, does the job and are replaceable. It would be nice to have the original wingnuts however. The poms seem to be better off for various reasons, like Mike said i guess with the proliferation of twin SU applications on other models. |

I wonder what the ones I got from the states were off then. They are the Cooper types - maybe Austin America's ???? In anycase the states is cheaper all the way round to source them from. |

For all the Cooper nuts out there, here's a little tid-bit to store away. They are thinner than the australian ones! It also includes the correct wingnuts for the twin airbox. I've got it here and sure enough the box is thinner by about 5 to 6mm, that would explain also the thinner air filter elements that pop up from time to time. Well there you go, it must have been another example of local engineering for the local conditions. I'll store this away until someone needs a English Cooper S airbox then, if it comes down to it, i will use it with a pair of UK elements until such time as one turns up that I can use. Swapsies anyone?

I have some of Pauls - look like a piece of tapped tube bit of threaded rod in one end and a wing nut screwed on and burred over to stop it coming off. Rough but effective |
