Post subject:  fuel gauge problem

i started my mini a while ago and my fuel gauge went up then past empty and stayed there. it has not moved for a while now, any ideas, apparently when she got a rebuild they re-connected everything so im thinking mayb the fuel float?

sounds like something is wired wrong....i had the same problem when i had all my gages wired up the first time..ive got all autometer unltra lite series and i had my petrol gage modified to suit the sender in the tank...the first time i hoked it up the needle went all the way up to full....cant remember witch wire was wrong but i no one was ..maybe double check ya wiring...

i didnt wire it, the mechanic who rebuilt it did. and yes convertable mini i would like to know how to fix it.

Start by opening the fuel cap and using a long rod of some sort to lift the fuel float up. Watch the fuel gauge to see if and how it moves.

Then look at the wiring on the back of the sender. The green black wire goes to an insulated contact, the black goes to a spade that is common to the back plate.

After this you will need to measure the voltage at the green black to see if it is getting the regulated 10 volts from the voltage stabiliser.

If these aren't correct then you will need to dive around the instrument cluster to chase some other colours.

Disconnect the wire from the sender on the tank and connect it to a good solid earth. With the ignition on, if the gauge shoots up to the full mark, its a float/sender problem. . .if the earthing doesn't move the gauge, then it's an electrical problem 'upstream' of the sender unit.

I realy dont like this guy for some reason. Its probably all of his other replies to genuine questions in the same spirit as above.
