I could put my plates on hold, yes, and get rego refunded...

BUT the question is--
if i just let the rego expire, can I keep my plates... without paying an annual fee for them ?
(i currently have personalised plates that attract an annual fee)
or will they chase me up for them...

What happens when I re-register the car and want to use these plates, will I have to end up handing them in anyway.. ?

It's illegal to keep the plates after rego runout, $50 fine I think.
and they won't let you reuse them if you keep until next time you want to rego it.

put em on hold if you want to keep.

Basically , the RTA owns the physical number plates and also the letters etc that are written on them . Failure to surrender plates attracts a fine like the doc said (though I thought it was more $$$) , if you don't reserve them whoever goes in asking for that combination of letters and numbers can be issued with them unless the plates haven't been handed in yet (and they'll start sending you dirty letters and increasing the fine) . Unfortunately the only way is to keep paying the holding fee .

There is a system where you hand in the plates to the RTA and for a storage fee they will reserve the personalised plates for you. When you again want those plates you just pay the appropriate rego charges (after of course an inspection and green slip etc) and then you get the plates back. You probably will be physically issued with new metal plates (and charged $40 for the new plates) but they would be "betty"

I had a feeling that you were asking do you have to pay the full rego fee to hold the plates - NO - only a holding fee.

thanks for the help wise lads - really useful and just what i was after.

I put the plates in for storage, and now got my rego refunded...
but i had to pay the annual fee for the personalised plates and sotrage fees, which cost more than the refund ... so i payed the RTA more money..

RTA have a good way of collecting money dont they ..
but atleast I know my plates are safe

There is some advantage to holding onto an original number and plate on such an original car as Jac I think. Whenever I've put plates in storage (3-4 times) I always get the same plate back. They actually do keep them at the RTA where you handed them back, the letter each year (at storage renewal time will confirm where they are). That also means if you happen to move, you will need to go back to the original location to get them when it's time.

A couple of times, I've re-used the plate, others I've ended up letting it expire as they no longer were relevant to the current car(s). I suspect that's what will happen with betty (or do you plan a major restoration?).

I've just encountered this issue (my rego expired while I was overseas and somebody got issued my old plates ABM-62C which I guess would be of use to someone with a 1962 BMC vehicle). The requirment to surrender the plates is purely theoretical as all you have to do is sign a form listing them as lost and youre off the hook. No fine. Plus once the rego and the 3 month grace period expire anyone can be issued with your plates even if you havent surrendered them.

It is however illegal to display the expired plates on your vehicle its a "Usage of Vehicle without correctly displayed number plates" and carries a minimum $308 fine and 3 demerit points (how do I know???......)

As for jac, he was meant to be a "temporary replacement" vehicle, but I think I've grown a slight attachment to him .. so he will be keeping his plates..

Mike Byron, i think you know, but jut for clarification, the plates stored were personalised for betty, reading "BETTY" so I cant turn Jac into a erm.. female

I thought my BMC-69S plates were safe in hold (for 8 years) but when I went to retrieve them they had somehow been 'mixed up' with the plates that were being destroyed.

The RTA had to make me a nice new shiney set. They now adorn my Hilux ute

Yeah I knew that they were for betty, but my suggestion was purely monetary saving.

However, Jac is often female - Jacqui, Jacqueline etc - but I guess your right, if your Jac has given you no real problems then it cant be a female.
