Post subject:  still got engine problems

hi again, this is a serious post for a change...well as serious as i can be.

armageddons motor is ahving issues, theres lots of oil getting into cyl. 4 i believe, as the spark plus is heavily oil fouled. also, i'm getting a puff of blue smoke when i change up gears (but not down????)

theres lots of smoke when i first start it in the morning, and when i'm decelerating (using the engine- revs are dropping slowly)

the motor also sounds like a lawnmower, im using alot of oil (maybe a litre a week and i dont drive it everyday. in fact, im avoiding driving it)

whats the problem? i've had a quick check of compression (using the thumb test, plenty there) so i dont think its the rings, i ahve a feeling a valve is not closing and/or seating properly and somehow oil is getting in through the valve stem. but thats alot of oil to get into such a small area, considering it can get out of other places more easily.

TIA

the only way really that oil can get inside the combustion chamber is either through ur rings or through the valve stem seals, if the blue smoke stops once the car is warmed up then its valve stem seals usually but if it is constant blue smoke u make have oil getting through the rings. Another thing is ur compression rings dont need to be broken for oil to get through, the oil scavenger rings that are on the top and bottom usually scrap the oil off on the downstroke so u may have the rings burnt in that cylinder, and it wouldnt hurt to do a proper compression check to be 100% sure

On my dad's Leyland, we found for a while there was oil in the emission system, putting oil i nthe carby manifold, which in turn burns in the motor.

Wierd ay.....??

that is strange. i dont ahve the pollution gear on though, so its not that.

i should get a proper compression test though.

another thing someone has said to me is to roll the car in 4th to see if the valves are moving in the right order. good plan? i live on a slight hill (and at the bottom :D) so thats no problem

Good idea. You never know, someone may have snuck into your engine and changed the position of the lobes on your camshaft. 8)
That is stupid beyond belief.

lol dude, seriously go get the compression test done if thats fine i would think about taking off the head and checking the bore and piston rings and also replace the valve stem seal

What does compression have to do with oil on the plugs?

if it is rings letting oil depending on how bad it might make the comp a bit better . the oil will create a better seal, better to get a leakdown test.

ok compression has nothing to do with oil getting through the piston rings there are three ringso n ur piston 2 are to scrap oil off the cylinder walls and the middle one for compression or the top one... one of the two i cant remember now. im to tired to think but if u are burning alot of oil i would advise u check ur rings and replace ur valve stem seal

Post subject:  valve stem seals

it could be ur valve stem seals. when ur car sits for a while and then u start it, it is blowing smoke, yes? it may be letting oil down passed the valve steam seal and into the motor.

HAHAHAHA yeah i just read that back. i mean, if one of them is misbehaving, not closing

good call though. man i feel ridiculous!!!!

ps yeah lots of smoke when its been sitting a while. strange thing is, the head is basically new, all the seals were new. makes me thing its wierd to be one of the stem seals

i had a problem with an oily fouled plugs and smokey exhaust

and i did a comp test and yep it was down on no.3 and had broken rings when pulled down for rebuild

still good for 55hp at the wheels with a single hs4 and there were a couple of bigblocks that ran less at the dyno day
