the beast is getting re upholstered and i plan on getting rid of the 4 point harness in there at the moment , been looking for original seatbelts , but having spoken to minisport there is no original seat belts for mini's prior to 71. Maybe a while before i find something in the original blue colour im after to suit thr era of the car .
my plan is to not put seat belts in till i find ones i'm 100 % happy with .

is it illegal to drive a 66 model without seat belts in nsw??

all my google search has found is a 2005 ADR requirement stating post1969 to be fitted with front seatbelts post71 front and rear . dont know if this is outdated !

The rules are that if the car was built with seat belts you must use them.
If it never had belts then you don't have to fit them.

You can get replacement belts.

if they were fitted in 66 you must have them now. My 69 falcon could be driven without seatbelts because they were not original fit.

Legal or not, I wouldn't drive anything without a seatbelt, I've seen how easily a sheet metal dash cuts into forehead.

In VIC it is legal in cars made prior to 1969.

But I wouldn't if I were you. Fit some modern or repro belts.

Post subject:  Seat belts for 1966 mini

Hi, I recently purchased blue seat belts for my 1969 Cooper S from Hemco.http://www.hemco.com.au/seatbelts.html They are not exactly the same as the old 1970's seatbelts I replaced but they do have differet colours and were very efficient at supplying. Check out the web site.

Hemco is exactly who I would suggest. They did custom belts for my import Corona in a few days and the prices were really good. :)

Worth remembering that it doesn't matter if they were originally fitted or not , it's if they had ever been fitted to it (even if it never had them till 12 months ago) , once belts have been fitted to a car it's illegal to remove them without replacing them .

When I wanted to fit seat belts to the rear of the 1100S, nobody would sell them to me.
They all said they had to be fitted by a licenced seat belt fitter and they would only supply through him.

I was also under the impression that if it has no seat belt mounting points (original) all new ones must be engineered.

My '64 Morris 850 has original seat belt mounts, for 3 point belts. I'm very sure your 1966 would have orginal mounts.

Yeah same mate, I also think its illegal to sell them 2nd hand ... or something like that.
You can get new seatbelts from car places (Eg/ Repco, Supercrap, etc) for a few hundred dollars each... ouch.

Pete.

The 1100S is a 68 car - it only has provision for seat belts in the front. Yes they were factory fitted but there is no provision for seat belts in the back.

The Blue slip bloke is wrong. Rear seat belts were a dealer fitted option.
The dealer was given instructions as to the correct place to drill the holes and the right hardware to fit them with.
