Trying to get the Clubby ready for a Rego check this week but having some odd problems.

The car had sat in the garage for about 7 years til early last year when I got her up and running again.

Drove round fine without problem at the time but failed rego check due to oil leak (Primary gear seal), height (hi los too low) and noisy.

Earlier this year pulled out the engine and fixed up the leaks , put in a new clutch etc. put on a twin box RC40 (previously had rear only RC40), replaced old K&N's (it's a twin HS4).

Went to start her up and running roughly and stopped then wouldn't restart.

Chased up all typical electrical issues and found plugs were fouled black wet and sooty.

Put in new plugs and started first compression but couldn't get any revs - would die immediately you tried. Plugs now black and sooty. (not wet - believe that was fuel not oil)

Since then haven't been able to get more than 10 seconds running... and recently not at all. Just winds over - no sign off attempted ignition.

(Cancelled Rego test booking today until resolved)

So...
Spark Plug Leads - new last year and sitting in garage unused.
Spark Plugs - new .... but keep having to clean. When not starting quite wet with fuel.
New Distributor Cap and Rotor.
Good spark from Lumenition - Coil lead about 6mm from earth point.
No obvious leaks at inlet manifold....

Any thoughts on what the problem may be / what to check next ?

Starting to drive me barmy...

:?

I always check ignition things first, but in this case I would check fuel supply as you can start it so ign probably ok.

Maybe blocked fuel filter or has water in fuel or even dodgy fuel (some optimal brands turn to gel wink wink)

Thank Daniel,

Hadn't thought about the fuel itself... but makes some sense as things have gotten progressively worse without any "changes".

Gives me a another line of fault checking. A simple test of replacing fuel in the float bowls and leaving the pump off will at least see if I can get her to start again.

Cheers,
Ken

It sounds like its drowning Ken....check the fuel (get some fresh stuff!) and make sure you have good flow....then onto the Carby float levels and mixture I suppose....are the air cleaners the correct sort??

I have a funny story involving an EFI converted MC engine I was working on in the little race car (avatar pic).

The young guys at uni had trouble starting it one day on the dyno, after changing plugs 4 times they got me to have a look and I said got to be fuel.

I pulled off the filter and sprayed fuel down the plenum, started first kick. I could keep it running by spraying fuel in (though I don't recommend doing this - it is very dangerous if the engine backfires) and it turned out the high pressure pump had kicked it. Next purchase was, one new fuel pump (the old one ws SH) and one fuel pressure gauge!

I would replace the fuel and are your float and mixtures correct?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions....

... tried emptying out the float bowls and putting in some new fuel....

... but still no sign of attempted ignition... :(

So went back to step one - and retested the Lumenition ....

and now dead as a dodo - no spark at all. :?

Borrowed another 29D with points and set that up...

..and Yes it is now actually attempting to start and chugging a bit...

Altered the advance and Sucess! :D

Purring like a sewing machine... and Revs without issue.

Turned the fuel pump back on - and running without a problem.

So looks like my 1991 vintage Lumenition was on it's death bed and running eratically and causing the rough running issues until finally giving up the ghost.

So now just need to replace the dead lumenition (with points for now), tune it and all should be fine !!

Again thanks for your help.

Ken.
