I have an unusual problem, this is where the story starts.

I am trying to get my mini 850 registered.
The other week I went to get my blue slip and apart from some movement in the upper ball joints, I have a problem with the engine number.

The engine number starts with 10YTAH or 10YTaH, not sure if the 5th digit is a lower or upper case 'A'.
Somebody in their wisdom, decided to make the 'A' better by engraving over the top of the 'A'. When the engine block got re-conditioned the top of the block got machined and I think the 'A' was a little faint (the only idea I can come up with).

The rest of the engine number is very clear.

Now the person who inspected it for the blue slip, marked it as needing a RTA identity check.

I am hoping since all the other numbers and letters are very clear, I will not have to go through much grief.
I was hoping to explain to the person looking, that the old rego papers has this number on it, and the 5th letter which has been stuffed up, isn't as significant as the remainder of the engine number, as the 1st half of the engine number identifies the type of engine and gearbox, i.e. 10YTaH.

I was hoping for a couple of things:
Could someone let me know if the 'A' was meant to be a 'A' or a 'a' ?

Also I have seen a lot of forum topics about people asking questions about engine numbers, but no real definitive guide to them.
I was hoping to find some type of guide I could show the inspector, that the 5th number could only be a 'a'.
Every time a see a topic about engine numbers, the replies seem really good, but never point to a good rule book on the possible combinations.
Would someone know where I could find one ?

What would be even better, is if someone had a picture of a similar engine number I could show the RTA inspector, that the previous owner wasn't trying to change the number but just try and make is clearer ?

Any suggestions would be of great help.

From memory it's meant to be a lower case a but it's only the engine number prefix that gives the type of engine , not the number itself so the fact it's either upper or lower case shouldn't make any difference . Maybe get a letter from a mini specialist saying what the prefix is etc ?

It is lower case - confirmed.
Send morris1100 a pm and he will hopefully send you back a message with all the codes and its significance.

Its an 1098 motor and therefore the car technically should have twin leading shoe brakes but i doubt anyone is going to pick up on that if the major quibble is a character on an engine number.

Blue slip means your in NSW somewhere but if you fill in your demographics we can point you at someone specifically who can help you should you need further help.

I live in Wollongong, but the car is currently located in Nowra.
So when I get the blue slip I will be taking it out to the RTA at South Nowra.

I am trying to find some type of workshop manual, which has me engine prefix.
Hopefully that will help the situation.

Or google it - there is plenty of info on the codes for engine numbers and a full explanation is not usually in the manuals. For example i believe your motor is originally out of a morris 1100 and that engine code would not be in a mini manual

The engine number should be stamped like this 10Y/Ta/H ***** (* = digits) but some were stamped with a big "A"
The engine is from a Morris 1100.
The code is...
10 = 1098
Y = Australian Manufacture
Ta = Remote control. std ratio gearbox
H = High compression engine (standard compression as opposed to low)

The Morris 1100 Australian workshop manual (green cover) will have the info on the engine number.

im going to getting one for my car soon and have been told of a few places in wollongong that are lenient on some aspects, as long as everything is safe

The mini at the moment is in Nowra, I went to
DJS Automotive in Nowra for the blue slip.

He was very good, but obviously couldn't do much about the messed up engine number.

I am waiting to get it registered to bring it up to Wollongong.

Have a squiz at this site. Identify your mini.

Does not show the Australian built engines.

Does not show the most common Morris 1100 engine.

Body prefix of Mk2 MiniMatic is wrong too. Should be YA2S5. Yes I've owned 2.
