Post subject:  Carburrator Selection

I've got a 1100 thats being worked, really lumpy cam and full exhaust system. Its got a 1 1/4 single su at the moment and its really lacking. Its either a 1 3/4 single su or the smallest webber which is the 40 DCOE I think. What do you think, and does that webber have fire wall issues.

Weber will fit fine with an offset Ramflo RF440S and a Redline 12-3005 manifold. I persuaded my firewall a little bit but generally not required.

Don't dismiss a single HS4 either it will still go much better with one than the HS2. You can always upgrade to an HS6 when one comes along if you think it needs it.

Regardless of what carby you bolt on (and anything is better than what you have) the needles (SU 's ) or the Chokes and jets (weber, dellorto etc) need to be matched to the engine. This is particularly the case with a modified engine.

Dont just bolt it on and expect miracles - it wont happen unless you are incredibly lucky. Too lean and you WILL burn holes in the pistons and too rich and the engine will not only puff out black smoke, but it will also fluff and puff.

either put it on a Dyno or line up a garage with with an exhaust analyser and a supply needles etc.

You can also give me specific (I mean very specific details) of your setup and I can run it through WinSu which would suggest some needles to start with.

I run a 1.75 HS6 on my 1030cc motor but did get it dyno'd and the right needle fitted...

Just know, the Weber and SU have totally different sound.
Before buying one, drive a car with Weber and a car with an SU and decide...

Each to their own, some like one some the other... I am an SU fan through and through...

Is the 45 DCOE weber longer than the 40 DCOE weber in length, or is it just internal differences.

Internally different size bores and butterflies, externally same dimensions.
A 40 carb will take up to a 34 or 35mm choke tube, but a 45 carb will take up to a 40.

Would I be able to get a 45 or just a 40 ml Weber. Also 45s seem to be a bit more common.

You can run a 45 on a 1098, Chong used a Dellorto on his and it went pretty well. I'd use 32 or 33mm chokes in it on a 1098.
Same comments apply to Weber DCOE, they are really very similar carbs.

40mm size would be best on a 1098, IMO.. :wink:
I prefer Dellortos for road cars, I find them less temperamental. Webers when they get worn can flood through the choke (starter) circuit, Dellortos don't have this problem.
