Post subject: | Gearbox rebuild V's Complete rebuild |
Hi All, I have been advised that the diff pin has to be replaced. As this job requires the gearbox come out and while your there rebuild yada yada yada…which i have no problem in doing cause the way it is running it is not a very pleasant drive. Clutch also may need some attention. Engine still ok but would be due for a freshening up just not yet as it is my daily driver. The question is would it be a bad thing if i have the gearbox rebuilt now and later on down the track have the engine rebuilt. Does it make a difference My intention all along was to have it all done at the same time, but the finances at the moment wont cover both. Then again will this kind of operation set me back more in the long run. Should i wait and save bit more and do it at the same time. Its a 1275 im not sure but it is possible that it has had a rebuild in the past, i want to take it out to 1330 not build a superfast car but a nice to drive car. |

Yeah, ideally you should do it all at once (purely for convenience), but, if the donk is running OK and the gearbox needs immediate attention....then do it!! |

No problem at all to do the box now. When you get around to the motor later, I'd then just lift the cluster gear and oil strainer out, slosh some diesel around in there good, tip it all out and wipe the inside front part clean, refit the strainer and cluster gear. ![]() |

![]() Thanks Doc. Yeah the more i mention this to ohers it is purely convenience to do it at the one time and would i be wrong in saying, save some time and money on gaskets. Cheers |

You shouldn't have to crack the block off the gearbox to do a diff pin, so you could just do the diff pin by itself for the time being. Then do the gearbox and engine at the same time. No need to strip and rebuild a whole box if you don't have to. It won't hurt to rebuild the gearbox now and the engine later if that's how you want to do it, just follow the Doc's advise if you do (I don't believe the doom-sayers that reckon if you put a reconditioned engine on a used gearbox it will destroy the engine. My engine survived through a terminal idler bearing failure that filled the whole box with metal shavings...) |
