Post subject:  Position of choke/heater cables

Hey guys

I'm currently in the process of replacing the heater cable in my S. I ordered the correct cable, however it seems way too short to make the journey from the left side of the panel to the heater tap. If it were located on the right side where the choke is, it would reach without a problem.

It would make sense for the choke to be on the right side of the panel closest to the driver, but now i'm doubting whether the cables are on the correct sides or if they are switched over.

Also, does anyone have any tips for running a cable through to the engine bay with minimal frustration. Navigating up and under insulation is going to be tricky.

Yeah I've had this problem with these cables before as well. The heater outer shroud is too short to go on the far side, it has to be fitted on the closer side to fit, perhaps they had clubman style heaters in mind with the heater tap inside the car, I dn't know.

There are two holes in front of the switch panel in the bulkhead for the cables to pass through, just get grommets for these as water seems to always get through here and will rust as it is kept between the carpet and the exhaust pipe heated bulkhead.

sitting in the car the heater in on the drivers side, and the choke is on the left. washer bottle on the right where you would expect to find the choke on a clubman

Cheers

Thanks guys. Kinda strange that the choke would be furthest from the driver.

I took my car to have the carbies tuned this arvo but i'll give the heater cable another shot when i get it back next week.

And don't forget that it's off when the knob is OUT, and on when the knob is pushed IN, though the tap won't let you get that wrong anyway.
My thoughts are that the heater was designed for the RH side because it's more likely you'd need to adjust that on the move than the choke, therefore it's within easier reach, and it's on when the knob is pushed in, cos the Poms would have had them on all the time and when pushed in it is out of the way.
Anyway, they're my theories.
Peter.
