Guys,
I started pulling the top off my engine this afternoon. Theres no turning back. The new cam is with GR, the 295 head is in the garage, the double timing gear is on its way, the new rocker shaft is here......... WTF am I doing.
Do you ever get the feeling that you may have bitten off more than you can chew.
All of you who have done this before please watch this space as I'm sure I will be calling upon your expertise.

I would expecting you have pulling the engine out also...as putting a cam in situ is very difficult.

Been there done that

Did the cam, timing chain change over and head in one Saturday/Sunday.

Pretty easy job if you take your time and have the right tools....and if the car cooperates with you lol

I just undid the radiator side engine mount and jacked the engine up.
The only crap part for me was trying to get the engine mount bolt back in when I dropped the engine back down into place...oh...and I snapped the timing chain cog while removing the single chain one..once I broke that there was no going back hahahahha.

We've all been there , it's surprising how daunting a mini engine can be the first time , do a few and then you'll be doing overhead cam motors etc . they're a great learning tool

All the time- right now I have and engine and gear box dismantled way past any point I have ever been before (lawn mowers and dirt bikes excluded) since I was 16 - but that was my mates car and we didn't know (or care) what we were doing - it was a miracle it ever started and was drivable - OK only in reverse and no muffler.

But as mentioned there is a lot of support on this (and other forums) and and good books and articles available and you never stop learning

I cheated.

I left the engine in, and ground down the tops of the bolts instead to about 2-3mm. After grinding them down I put the chain assembly on and just kept checking the clearance was good enough.

No - dont cheat - it will bite you on the bum expensively. You need nothing less that allan key bolts and counter sunk holes.

I had an experiences where the allan key nuts were not countersunk enough. They unwound just slighty and caught on the timing chain. The motor rain for less thirty seconds and it was pulling apart time to see what the noise was.

Everything flexes in runtime and it WILL catch.

Didn't the good Doc say that if you use the Rollermaster kit that countersinking is not necesary......it's a bit more expensive but it might save a bit of work Matt.

I'd countersink em- and use the right screws- do it properly so it doesn't bite you on the bum later.
Tip- Loctite the threads...
