Post subject: | white oil in the top of rocket cover |
hi, today i have noticed that i have a lot of water in the oil (white oil) it seems to be on the inside of my rocket cover. the sump oil is still gold and new and there is no signs of a head gasket problem. the car is driven daily and is left out side in the cold. wat is causing this to happen. |

Used to happen a lot to my car in cold weather on short trips. Not so much anymore. I wouldn't worry, jsut wipe it out of the cap, and check it often. Short trips, in cold weather seems to provoke this. <edit> Just remember that there's air in your rocker cover, and I bet if you took off your breather stack things, and looked in the bottom of them you'd see the same. The air contains water, which would give you the white crap. I think if a head gasket had blown, power would be crap and I think you'd find white crap in the sump oil too, but you don't. I'm putting my money (so to speak) on condesation of the moister in the air in your rocker cover which the oil splashs up and mixes with. |

How's your radiator cap / water looking? Any bubbles? |

Oh yeah should've mentioned, what the temp like? Does the car overheat? If so, look for leaks, but I'm still going for condesation. |

so wat could be causing this? If you are not loosing coolant...then it must be condensation as others have suggested...have a look at the breathing set-up you are using on the engine. |

(and every year the experts always shout "blown head gasket" ![]() Do you do a lot of short trips? Are the breathers on your engine hooked up properly? What brand of oil are you running? All these things will make a difference. |

1275 in my Riley Kestel did the same thing when we first collected in in NZ, after a few good runs it settled down - I reckon it's a short trip thing |

It does seem to depend on the brand of oil you use, the time of the year (winter is worse) how far you drive, what mini model and how the engine breathers are configured, etc. I have a number of minis and some are worse than others, Just wipe out the gunk and keep on driving. ![]() |

I switched from Penrite HPR30 to KMX as well as returning the breathers back to standard. This seem to work on my car so far. I don't have as much mayo as last year. ![]() |

I have KN type filters on the breathers and its a new motor with new filters. What I think happens is that the hot engine sucks in cool moist air as it cools and it forms as condensation on the interior surfaces of the engine. The next time the engine is fired up and run to normal temperatures the condensation it boiled off, usually in a shorter trip but doesnt escape entirely to the atmosphere. It then combines with some oil to form the mayo we worry about when we see it. A mini motor has a very large pulse of crankcase pressure compared to other engines. Doc's PCV valve will work very well because it is exactly that, a valve, which limits back flow into the engine. My open flow KN's work very well as far as the breathing goes but it is very much a two way system. I get mayo !!!!! I no longer pull hair because of it. |

Not necessarily - I have three breathers - one of the clutch cover, one on the timing case cover and one from the rocker cover. All are free and open. I get mayo and its not from lack of breathing. Its a winter thing in most cases. |
