Post subject:  speedo not working
hello guys and chicks

my speedo hasnt been working for some time now. this means odo not working either. where does it connect on the engine end (or where ever it goes) so i can have a look to see if it is connected?

if it is, this would mean its broken somewhere, how would i go about replacing it?

probably a broken cable. Unscrew from the back of the speedo (thing about as fat as your finger with a knurled nut on the end screwed to the speedo).Other end is attached to the speedo drive unit bottom back left side of motor near the engine mounting bracket under the radiator.

If you undo the speedo end first and pull the inner cable out you'll soon know if its broken :wink:

ok cool cheers. next Q, its a 3 guage clubby dash, do i have to take the thin out to get at the back of the speedo? i've found it a big pain to get at in the past

You may be able to get your hand around behind the dash. Try it !!!

However, you may find that if its a three gauge dash that the speedo is not a screw type but a slip on one that is held on by a plastic clip arrangement. Hard to describe but real easy to see how it works.

i remember i had to change my speedo cable, i had no way of gettting the car high enough to reach the connection to the block from underneath the car so i had to push my wrist in from the top. By the time i had the cable connected my wrist was all cut up and bleeding preety baddly, you need like 4 elbows to reach it from top. The instrument cluster is a bastard 2 i could never get mine to stop rattling after i changed it so i just used silastic to hold it in place.

remember too there are two types of speedo cable conections a twist one and a push one. Dont buy a cable untill you know which one you have.

Generic answer - yes

Better answer is that its not always possible. It depends on where the cable is broken. A lot of the time the cable is just rounded (instead of square) where is goes into the speedo or the gearbox. Then you just whip it ut and carefully insert the new inner.

If its broken down into the outer cable cover then its the colourful french language producing lie on the back struggle.

It is possible to get a broken inner out without undoing the botton - I had a lock of some sort on the bottom of mine and the cable broke and couldn't get it off. I had the cable out the bottom of the car and after some time of fiddleing I flicked the sheath (sort of like a whip) and out sailed the inner. Slipped in the new inner and put it all back together.

Edit: Bit more information : The car was up on ramps so I had more room and I had been fiddleing for some time with the cable sheath pulled though so it was hanging out the bottom of the car. It possible with my fiddle the inner cable had moved up the sheath a bit so that it was out of the drive in the engine - when it finally came out I was in a fit of frustrated rage so it was not a precise movement. :roll:

if its not the speedo cable that stops it from working, try the little silver 12 volt transformer thingy in the back of the clock, my clocks stopped working and a mate said try changing it and it was the little transformer that was the problem just swaped with one from another clock and worked again

That's the 10volt voltage regulator to supply the gauges but not the speedo which is mechanical

Must be that time of year. I too busted a speedo cable. Damn Shame, as I have been wondering how fast I really have been going :lol:
This too makes my odometer not work either. I suspect it is a speedo cable, to be replaced as per mentioned.

yeah my odo hasnt been working either, but the thing is, it hasnt been working since we dropped the engine in. which says to me it wasnt connected properly or at all.

if this is the case will the socket be full of crap?
