When I get my Mini from Brickworx it will have 3 months SA rego.

Question is, will that matter for me at all as I live in NSW ?

Is it better to get it with NO rego (But engineered) and have it blue slipped and registered here (Mechanic at work can do me a blueslip + pinkslip) ? OR Can I do a straight transfer of SA rego to NSW rego ?

I just dont want to pay for 3 months rego in the price of the car, and then have to pay for 12 months rego as soon as I get it here. Does the 3 months rego from SA carry over into NSW ?

Regardless of rego status, you will have to get a blueslip done to register in NSW. You cannot transfer interstate rego to NSW rego. Technically you must transfer interstate rego to NSW once the vehicle is going to be permanently staying in NSW, not that most people do.

If I was you, pink slip or equivelant in VIc, apply for unregistered vehicles permit and drive it back to NSW. Then blueslip and register in NSW.

Legally you are allowed to drive an interstate registerd car for three months in NSW and then it must be re-registered in NSW. It will require a blue slip inspection to have it registered in NSW.

It all depends on how rich you are at any one time and what is your expenses loading in mid september. Personally I would drive an SA registered car for a while to see what faults it may or may not have before fronting the RTA and a blue slip inspector.

On the soap box for a moment - I really do feel that its time we had a federal system of road, vehicle and traffic laws and systems. It should be one federal registration and simply administerd by the state to stop this very nonsense you are facing.

When I went through exactly the same process with my car, I left the rego in Steve's name until I was ready to transfer it over to NSW rego.

Everything that has been explained above is correct, you will need to blueslip it. I also got an engineer's report, that whilst may not be a requirement, at one stage I did produce it whilst standing at the RTA counter. They treated mine as 2nd hand vehicle from interstate, however as it was an import they asked for the engineer's certificate and the DOTARS documentation as well. It basically made the whole thing smoother being able to produce these documents, and the RTA officer didn't bother to ask their supervisor or refer me for VIIU check.

I followed these instructions (see both "Second-hand vehicles currently or previously registered interstate" AND "Imported Vehicles").

Make sure that Steve gives you all of the documentation surrounding your car. He did that with me (a bundle of papers), and the ones that the RTA where most interested in was the proof of purchase (along with the weighbridge ticket, blue and green slips).

My advice is go down to the RTA with the car and as much documentation as you can compile in a neat little folder, park it, take the SA plates off, walk in there and be as polite and as business like as you can possibly be.

You can have a vehicle registered in a different state.
My brother lives in Darwin and he kept a car in NSW at mums place.

NSW rego.
Postal address = Darwin
Car garaged address = Goulburn
Easy peasy.

The vehicle needs to be registered in the state where it is garaged.

Im in NSW, car will be in NSW.

Car is coming FROM S.A.

1) Get the car registered in SA by Steve in his name (or you can get it registered in SA in your name but it takes more paperwork)
2) Transfer the SA rego to your name and NSW postal address but keep the garage address as SA.
3) Take car to NSW and you have 3 months to re-register the car in NSW.

Also don't forget that at some stage to be strictly legal, you need to hand in the SA plates. Not sure if NSW RTA will take care of this for you or not?

No need to do this, I checked with the RTA and was told that I had 3 months to do the transfer, which was the amount of SA rego left on the car.



The RTA will take care of this, and will advise that if you want a refund on the SA rego to write a letter to the Dept of Transport SA including a copy of the NSW rego. As I had left the transfer until the final month before it ran out, it wasn't worth the effort to recover the $20 or so.

When I tried to do this in NSW, they would not let me!

I was looking at purchasing a car and keeping it at my mother's place in Shellharbour on NSW rego. The NSW RTA told me that I had to prove I lived there at least part of the time via a utility bill or similar in my name.
