my eldest son took his clubman to a machanic who said he knew minis for a tune up He said his clubman needed a rebuild and my son drove it home missin and runnin like a wounded rabbit With tears he asked me to hav a look The bloke had its revs backed way up its carb chokeing in fuel and had also mucked around with the timeing Ive tickled the carb and brought her back to normal but shes still missin bad new plugs and points did nothin and she dont need a rebuild hes did something and i cant find the problem shes a 998 with extractors and twin pipes plain but she was a good motor any of you blokes or girls have any wisdom to what he might have done and why she misses and runs like a dog ps dont trust your mini with anyone who cant tune an su carby |

Yep , that's a big help ..... Check the dist cap in case they cracked it being ham fisted , make sure all the leads are on nice and tight to plugs and cap ????? |

Good point Jed . Is there any hoses missing from the inlet manifold or any adapters without anything on them , it could be drawing air in after the carb which was the reason they screwed around with the carb so much ? |

sorry to hear that, i am sure someone in nsw can tell you where to take the mini to get tuned properly, or maybe someone who knows the magic can have a play with it. finding mechanics you can trust is hard |

sorry to hear that smokey,theres quite a few good mini mechanics around syd i hear, take it to one of them. which piston is it missing on, remove a spark lead one at a time to find out? check your compression and make sure you havnt got dud leads. |

get the specs for timing, and re time the engine with a timing light check sparkplug gap, clean them (even renew if old) check leads for high resistance make sure rotor and cap are in good condition once done all that start playing with fuel and air mixtures

Wow, sorry to hear that. I too experienced the frustration of bad SU "tuning" by a mechanic who didn't know his SU's. I ended up taking it to a family friend that knew SU's (and classic british cars) like the back of his hand. He managed to fix the major problems for me and get her running well again, but suggested i still take it to an SU specialist with a dyno to have it tuned that little bit more to perfection (going to end up taking it to Dynotune in Braddon here in Canberra). Anyway, all i can suggest is that you ask around locally within british car clubs to see if anyone is a pro at tuning SU's (try an MG car club aswell). |

by any chance, he didnt decide to take the oil out of the carb? i know of a mechanic, not mini related at all, who thinks it will run better with no oil, added oil, and it was heaps beter! |

But yes, stock carb on a stock 998 prolly still needs dashpot oil. It sounds to me (and there is not really enough info to say exactly) like its your timing. Did he try adjusting the dizzy? He could have advanced or retarded it... My dizzy spun and it ran like a dog. Coughing, spluttering, misfires... He probably stuffed the mixtures, stuffed the timing. Thats my guess. |

Also try contacting Warick Agu..in (name also withheld for privacy) he owns a winery in your area and is a sollid member of the local car club. Warick raced minis for many years and was a front runner back then. He currently has a at least one Cooper S that he uses on the car club runs. I am sure approached sensibly we would be willing to help out a young bloke. PM me for further details. |
