I took my GT to work today. It's my toy and not a daily. I LOVE it that way. :D I recently rebuilt the Weber and put an electric points kit into the original GT dizzy. In my opinion it was running well. The best it had been since I bought it.

This afternoon after work I stopped in to have a chat to Ivan at Mini Spares & Repairs, in Castle Hill. I have known Ivan since I bought my first Mini, and I trust every word that he says. Ivan owns Clubman GT #24. It was a car that I heard was for sale a while back, and told him about. He bought it without even seeing it. It needs resto, but it's going to be a mint GT when Ivan does it.

Anyway..... when I arrived at Mini Spares & Repairs, the first thing Ivan said was that my Weber needed attention.

"No way" I said! "It's the best it has ever been."

I popped the bonnet and he proceeded to remove the top cover from the Weber and with digital vernier in hand set the float level. "An old Alfa setting that never fails" he said. (He was an Alfa mechanic a long time ago too!)

He then started the GT up and with one ear cocked to the side, he spent some time adjusting the mixtures and idle. Forget fancy exhaust gauges and dyno 'rolling roads', he did it all by ear!

He confidently said "give that a go" and closed the bonnet.

I thought it might make a slight difference, or to be honest not make any difference at all. I thought I had set the Weber up right when I rebuilt it the week before.

 Bloody hell!

No word of a lie, that tune up made the biggest difference to the way the car runs. The drive home was really amazing, and most definitely the best the GT has ever been.

I recall his last words as I left....... "I think you will enjoy driving this car now"

Ivan has been doing this sort of thins for a long time, and if you live in Sydney I seriously think you should talk to Ivan about your Mini service / rebuild / parts requirements.

I haven't been paid to say this, and I don't owe Ivan anything. I believe in HONEST and RELIEABLE service and information, and anyone that can deliver that earns my respect.

As a public forum I felt this information was worthwhile.

My mechanic did the same. I stood there and watched as he listened to my car. I guess it is a skill, as I get compliments on the sound of my car now. I only let him touch the car now. Good honest work. I am happy to pass his name on for people in country victoria if anyone is interested.

Hi,
my 2 cents worth is that I have always found Ivan to be extremely reliable. You can buy the knowledge that man has about Minis and setting up engines. he and Graham Russell are just brilliant.

Jim :D
