Has anyone removed their Cam without first removing their engine ????

No, but it can be done. If you have removable tappet chest covers, and a non spider drive cam.

The tappet chest covers so you can remove the cam followers (mark which one is which if reusing cam/followers)

The non spider drive cam, otherwise the spider will fall into the gearbox, NOT a good thing.

You need to remove the radiator, timing gear, rocker gear, pushrods, tappet chest covers, cam followers, cam shaft retaining plate. Cut a hole in your inner gaurd to allow cam to be removed.
Remove cam

Reverse to refit.

I'd just haul the unit out and do it on the bench

I have done it on a smallbore, years ago.
No need to cut a hole in inner guard. Just cut the one radiator slat that's in the way, at bottom. Bend it up. When done bend back down, reweld if you want. Or leave it unwelded, for next time...

Not worthwhile attempting it with a non-S 1275, even if NOT spider drive- the cam followers prevent you sliding cam out. Yes you `could' use 8 magnets on alloy tubes down the pushrod holes like Vizard sort-of suggested, but if fitting another cam you would want to fit new lifters anyway, wouldn't you.... 8)

Post subject:  Yes you can do it.

I have done it with my Speedway mini... I always used an Non S 1275 block. But I used to roll the car on it's Driver's side Just past vertical so when you remove ther rocker gear and the Chain you rotate the cam a few times to push all the followers out of the way for the cam to be able to come out freely., Make sure the car is rotated past centre so the Cam followers do not fall in the sump/gear box. Just watch out for the Pump drive.....Not quite as easy on a prestigeous car though. You might put Dents in the side that you do not need.

Beautiful thing about my 998. Tappet chest covers. Two bolts and a standard size index finger and "hey presto" cam followers removed.

Drop it where- the cam is still in there, they can't fall thru into engine- the tappet chest oil drainback holes are smaller than the followers.8)
<edit> A warning to those with a MiniMatic though- the auto's oil pump is spider drive. Sure you can get the cam out, but the oil pump spider has a 50/50 chance of falling into the box, so don't risk it.
