you may as well make an upgrade and go for a worked 12g202 or a 12g295. both are good heads.

Cheers
Aaron

and careful with your reply  ...what we need to know is whether the head has just blown a gasket, or cooked itself and cracked, dropped valves, whatever...

ok did a coolant change, the hose going into the head wasnt tight enough and while i was driving it fell off. Car was still at about 80c so I thought I'll go and fill it up with water. 2km later the car was at 110c and I was at a servo filling it up with water.

I then drove off and the car starting making sounds like it was missing. Drove another 5kms and turned it off. Its still missing a fair bit, dont know if its blown head gasket or cracked or warped, etc.

But I wanted to get a new head anyway? anyone got a spare 12g202 or 12g295

"New" heads cost a bomb...a reconditioned one is also not cheap...can you get the number off your head (its cast into the head under the rocker cover) or show us a picture of the engine bay from the front at least....your head may be well worth reconditioning...

Edit: oh...and are you sure you haven't just knocked something electrical under the bonnet or got water in the electrics???

I think you should have a 12G202 stock anyway - just needs a bit of work and she'll flow good.

12G295's are expensive and rare - though i saw one for sale the last few days on here.

Find out what you damage you have done first and go from there.

Pics will help us. It would be best if you gave us all the information you can so that we can help you best - otherwise you may do something you didn't need to do (or damage something) and cost yourself time and money...

There are a lot of smart people here who can help ;)

Where are you located?

Water is probably dissapearing cant tell yet. Theres nothing underneath the car at the moment.

Checked the cap and theres not water in it. Its been out of the rain for about 2 hours now so Im assuming its fairly dry in there.

Just looks like your average small bore head...its not a smog head from a later car.

OK....you need to check that all your hoses are properly fitted and not split including the little bypass hose under the head just behind the thermo statr housing.....then...check all your electrics are dry and connections are made well....

I would carefully unclip the distributor cap and have a look at the points and to check it is dry in there...

Then start her up...and if it runs OK....just see if your water level drops or whether you are getting bubbles up through the radiator cap...DO NOT take the radiator cap off bare handed if you have ran the engine up to temperature :!:

If that goes OK....take it for a short drive...not too far from help tho

Come back...Look around the engine, hoses etc for leaks...if the coolant level doesn't drop, there may not be a problem with your head.

Where are you located :?: Put your location in your profile plse.

coolant is bubbling away so I'm assuming its cracked or warped.

Got a quote for a 202 for $330 (fully rebuilt) so I think I might go for it.

Just because you have done a head gasket doesnt mean your head is warped or cracked.

Dont get your head rebuilt just for the sake of it.

dnt run out and buy a new head for the sake of it.
first:
The old a-series is a tough unit, you wont warp a head as easy as in a jap car with an aloy head, itll take more than one little overheating to warp it(in my experiance anyway)

Second:
if you go out and buy a nice recond head and slap it on, its going to (hopefully) be all nice and true, whats to say that your block is all nice and flat?

Third:
a top end set is like $25, a head gasket is $11 (in nz anyway) and a bypass hose is like $5, so for a max of $35 and 2-3 hours you can find out, worst case, loose $11, best, save $330

just my humble 2c nz.

Agreed. Don't go and buy a new head yet. Take it off, bull it down, check to see how true it is, put it all back together with new stem seals, etc.

Listen to this guys 1.80903cAU!
