Post subject:  blown engine

On the way home from mini king camden yesterday
my engine starting spurting oil out of the dipstick and
pressure was coming out of the oil filler cap.
I think the rings are gone. All the engine bay is covered with oil.

Does this sound like an engine rebuild?

Either that or all your breathers are blocked up... but sounds like broken rings or worse to me. How old is the engine?

Hi Kevin,
The only breather on the engine is from
rocker cover to air cleaner and it's not blocked.
The engine was in the car when I bought it from
that mini place at Brookvale. It's a mini K 10yc engine.

I was given a engine about 2 years ago which
I am thinking of installing.It has a s/n of 100122..
does anyone know what this comes out of.

Thanks Felix

1001 prefix engine is from a 1098 Clubby.

Thanks kevin,
I'll go and clean the mess and decide
whether to fix this engine or drop
the other engine in and see how it goes.

My 10yc engine only has a breather hose going from
the rocker cover to the air cleaner. The pipe on the
side cover has been squashed closed.
Before i put my spare engine in,should I open the
side cover outlet and attach a hose to it and run it to a
catch can and reroute the rocker cover hose to the catch can as well.

Will this stop oil spirting up thru the dip stick hole
and the air cleaner hose and pressure coming out of oil filler cap.

thanks Felix

What you have is the original Morris 1100/Mini K breather system.
The squashed sidecover pipe actually has a tiny hole in it to let air IN.
The other pipe off the breather went to a sandwich plate on the carb inlet.
All I can say is it did work but was marginal at best.
I would get a side cover/breather off a late 998 Clubby (same as Cooper S had) and run both it and the rocker cover hose to a catch tank.
Yes it should stop your problem unless the rings are terminal.

If you fit K&N etc Bling filters on them instead, as the trendy Mini owners are wont to do- remember they do clog up with too much oilz if motor is getting tired...

I installed my spare engine only to find that there
is oil coming out of the bell housing drain hole
and the clutch is slipping.
Question is can the clutch be changed with engine installed
and can the oil seal be replaced once the clutch is removed.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks Felix

Yes i changed my rear end oil seal about a week ago or two.

Undo your bottom driver side engine mount and radiator bracket then jack one side (driverside) of the engine up. This will allow enough room to get bell housing off (to get your spanner to all bolts). then all come off petty straight forward. Note though to take the washer bit out of the crank after you take the flywheel bolt off (i didnt - many problems) too use the flywheel puller.

Be careful puting oil seal in not to damage it over the teath exposed. Borrow a special tool if you can.

Hope this helps, and goodluck

so can you take the flywheel off when its in side of the engine bay, how long would it take to replace a clutch at a leisurely rate,

Junior did the same thing with his K engine he has at the moment, spitting oil out the dipstick, turns out his rings are gone so hes going up to Wagga in the next week or so to get the rings replaced etc and a new interior while hes there :D

Gives me time to mess around with our K and get it all rubbed back ready to paint, cant wait to start retoring her

What methods does everyone use to
change the primary gear seal
if you do not have the special seal tool

Thanks Felix
