Does anyone out there know where I might be able to get some metallic green engine paint as original colour of cooper S and early 850 etc. Or if anyone has any info on what the name of the colour might be or a paint code so I can get some mixed myself could you please let me know. Any assistance sould be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Most decent paint places should be able to put you onto BMC engine green (think it was called Almond here) but like British Racing Green or Old English White there were a number of different versions. I had two blocks that looked very different next to each other but when they were in car you couldn't tell. Doubt they ever did a metallic so you'd have to get somebody to colour match it - code for a metallic will be different to a flat.
Some paint guru will now tell me I'm full of it

I got Cooper S metallic green paint from Mini Car Clinic (now Mini Spares Australia) here in Padstow. A 1L tin was about $40.
You should find it at Northern Mini Parts as they own `em now.

Alpine Green from White Knight Paints is a pretty good match too.

Hi all,

Thankyou all very much for your help and information on the topic. Although I am not sure if all that bitching was neccesary. I did find the colour i was looking for and for all those out there who might also be in my earlier predicament, the name is "Sheerwood green" It is a mitsubishi colour that is very very close to the original cooper S metallic green and is in a spray can. I picked it up at Link Automotive in Mitcham in Melbourne if anyone else is interested and it is not a hammer tone. I have also seen a Holts branded paint in the same colour at Auto one and Repco but only in smaller touch up cans. Thanks again everyone for your help on this interesting topic.

Cheers

hey Cush,

Yeah that probably is the original 850 BMC engine green that i should have sprayed the engine in but I think the cooper s metallic engine green look heaps better. Either way, it is still green. I believe that all ausie cooper s engines came from england already painted this dark green and then painted in the metallic green once they got to Australia. I will post a picture of my painted engine as soon as I take a photo.

Not just Cooper S motors. All the imported motors got re-sprayed. (Mini-Matic, Morris 1100 auto, Cooper S, etc.)

Kev,
Would you get a decent finish using a brush instead of a gun. I'm thinking it would be a lot easier to do it with a few different size brushes.

I sprayed Barney's motor after etch priming, but brushed HaHa's straight on. Brushing works the paint into the surface better.
The brushed finish looked better than the sprayed.

The paint on Barney's is now starting to show poor adhesion here and there, despite the extra paint prep.
Both motors got the same paint, but Barney's was obviously thinned for spraying.
