hi all,
i'm having a bit of trouble with my spark plugs.
i'm using champion n9y plugs on a 1100 unleaded engine and
the plugs are becoming sooty and engine then does not fire on all 4 cylinders.
once i clean them engine runs like a dream.
am i using the right plugs and is this happening because i don't drive the car often
thanks :

N9Y should be OK on an 1100, or any near stock Mini.
If sooty, either the mixture is rich or the ignition has a problem. How old are the plug leads, points & dizzy cap?
If all are sooty I'd suspect the carby mixture.

hi dr
yes all plugs were sooty
i'll adjust the mixture tomorrow
note..when i take the car for a long run and remove the plugs there all clean
that what makes me think the soot is from doing short runs or
just idling the car in the garage
thanks

Either the carb mixture is set too rich or the float level is too high, I reckon.

i had this problem

carb needle had bad marks on it
and put new gasket on breather plates (just under manifolds on the back)

now car doesnt turn off anymore,
because of plugs that are really sooty

because of plates that dont suck air no more?

fingers crossed

Yeah there's only 800 or so of 'em now- at $20 each, which one is dead right for you?

the doc was right the mixture was way out- too rich-.
i adjusted it by using my colortune spark plug which i
bought years ago for use on my mgb but never used it,
also found qne cylinder not firing due to a shorted spark plug.
thanks again guys
