Hey peeps

I'm finally going to get my beast put in and fixed up, and was wondering if there's a particular type/brand of wheel bearing that is best to use? I only got one fixed back in March, and already it's apparently on the way out (as well as the other one on the front which is stuffed). I'm probably going to get the CV boots done while I'm at it.

I have a distinct lack of room/tools/skill, so I'm not gonna attempt this one myself. Seems a bit advanced for a beginner.

Yeah, every time I do a full lock turn that click click click is telling me to do something about those CVs , thank god for selective deafness

Yeah get tapered roller bearings they are what i use.

timken tapered rollers are the crap when it comes to bearings

To be Honest We have had thoses tapered bearing in our minis for over 20 Years and ahve never had any fail They are always dismanlted and regreased and Seem perferctly Fine

excellent, i shall ask for those bearings. i have the dreaded noise at full lock ... i wonder if i should get something done about it. it's been like that for as long as i can remember though

I figure when it stops going click click click and starts going clunk clunk clunk it'll be time to do something

sound like u have a worn CV Joint and it may need changing and not worn bearings.

Bearings ggive a whining noise when they need grease or are worn out

the bearing is shot, it most def needs changing. i only had one done back in March, but a few weeks after that i had to make an emergency stop 'cos a drunk guy walked out in front of me with his bicycle when i was doing 60, and i had to throw an anchor out not to hit him. once we rounded the corner from there onto the freeway, i heard the dreaded bearing noise start up. i have done some light driving on it since, but i dropped it in to get checked out at one of the local places here. he told me that both bearings were shot, the cv boots were shot, and that he wanted to change the CV joint. he quoted me just over $1000, which i thought a little steep, so i drove her home and parked it in the garage. been sitting there since. the drive home sounded awful - so much so that i'm not game to drive it more than a few hundred metres atm.

i think he was probably right about the cv joint - especially given the noises it makes at full lock. but im not convinced both bearings need doing - especially since the other one was only changed in March.

If a bearing needs doing on one side, I've always done the other side too so as "even wear" and all that sort of thing - hmmmm Always done this sort of thing for any part that needs replacing. Maybe I spend too much money but was told years ago that you replace the corresponding part too, even if it appears ok.

Tha is True but when some are only on a small Bugdet that is all they can afford.

I always get the right stuff first time to prevent further problems or costs.

another q -

assuming i need to get the bearings, cv joint, and boots replaced on both sides, any ideas what a reasonable price would be? it'd be nice to have a fair idea so i know if i'm being taken for a ride or not

CV's, boots and bearings for both sides in Sydney would be $400 + / - a bit. Labour might be that again.....depends where you go really.

See if you can buy the parts and take them to someone to fit. Might save some $$$ that way. Remember Heritage MG in Sydney can sell you all that stuff. I got my CV boots from there. My bearings came from Karcraft in Sydney. They do shipping the same as Heritage.

That sounds about the right Price.
