Hey fellas,

I've been interested in putting Ramflo filters on my S for awhile now, but, being the beginner mechanic that I am (and taking things one step at a time) i have a few questions.

Firstly, the return spring currently attaches to the bottom of the filterbox. If the box was to be replaced by a couple of Ramflo's, where is the spring going to attach?

Also I read Calver's write up regarding the testing of different filters and he mentioned that when installing a new filter, re-tuning should be taken into account due to the new change in air flow/efficiency. Has anyone found this to be true?

if you are thinking of doing this for a performance upgrade, consider getting better replacement elements first. K&N would be ideal.

If you do replace with ram flos, make sure you oil the air filter element as it is next to useless without being oiled. you need to use a proper air filter oil (such as finer filter) as it needs to be flame resistant.

Any change to filter efficiency will change (increase usually) the amount of air entering the carbs, therefore the mixture settings will have changed. you may need to reset your idle mixture, however your needles will now be too lean throughout the range. On an S, changing from M (standard) needles to AH2 (rich) is a good start, but a dyno tune is the only way to get it spot on.

You should have a heat shield, which the throttle return springs (3 of) should attach to (the cross piece). None should attach to the air filter.

You did mean cooper s right?

I use Ramflos on Barney (1293 with S Police Pack HS4 carbs), but their foam is crap, fit Unifilter foam pads instead. Flows much better.
p/no is LNX300. Around $8.95 ea from Unifilter. :wink:
You will need to change the needles from standard.
S return springs (all 3) normally go down onto the heatshield... :?

I have a long spring that goes from underneath the filter box down to the accell. connection.

I figured it was just another return spring. I'll take a photo and show you guys in a bit.

I would not change to Ramflows till winter is over. I can get enough carby ice with the standard box drawing warm air off the exhaust!

I have seen the return spring mounted under the airfilter box before, it is not the right way to do it!
It should have a plate between the heatshields for the three return springs to hook on.

I'm pretty sure the 3 springs are on there, plus this 4th long spring.

I'll go take a look in a bit as i can't be sure
