I just bought a steady bar and a new bracket to suit my 1978, 1275.
It had a bodged up bar and a shorter bracket so im correcting it be refiting the original.

Problem is the bracket hole and the bar dont line up unless the bar is twisted and under a lot of pressure, is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

Short answer - no - not normal.

But I am assuming this is the engine steady bar that connect to the fornt of the engine where the thermostat cover is (or nearby)

The engine moves with a great deal of force. and if the steady bar is already under stress then sooner of later something is going to break.

When I had a rodchange box in my Clubby with a 1275, I found the radiator end steady fitted very poorly- it barely fits under the 940 head.
Don't know if all were made like that but mine was under stress too.
