Is anyone out there running a mini as a dirt rally car? Interested to hear thoughts - if someone is doing it, I'd love to see some pictures of your vehicle and get some idea on the mods done. |

Many moons ago, I ran a Mini in dirt road rallies, mainly in the forests to the NW of Melbourne. In those days the events were run at night on forestry roads by clubs like the Swinburne College Car Club. The roads were much better than those used in dirt events today, and a well set up Mini with sump guard and underbody protection could do well. Unfortunately most good forestry roads are no longer made available for this purpose at the club level, leaving only rocky goat tracks that I wouldn't consider puting a Mini down. It may be different in your neck of the woods, but it's the condition of the roads and the likelihood of damage that turned me to tarmac events like Rally Tasmania. |

There is a very good book written by a BMC works mechanic about the rally cars driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno in the great rallys. It has heaps of photos and a great deal of detail. I think Watto even sells it but if you pm 1310/71 he will give you the ISDN number and the correct title. It was his copy I read one time at his place. |

There is a very good book written by a BMC works mechanic about the rally cars driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno in the great rallys. It has heaps of photos and a great deal of detail. I think Watto even sells it but if you pm 1310/71 he will give you the ISDN number and the correct title. It was his copy I read one time at his place. |

Hi there, well we run a mini on dirt, not quiet full on rally but autocross/rallycross. WOW!! what great fun this is. Its a 77 Leyland, 998 +60, 285co cam, lightned and balanced bottom end, nice 1100 big valve head, russell inlet manifold on a twin bowl 1.5" SU. Rod change gear box, 4.2/1 final drive thur a welded diff!!! Man what a hand full with the weldie!! Pretty standard suspension, dry, welded and strengthned sub frames, koni shocks, camber and castor. Over here in Tassie autocross is popular, they run two classes, road tyre and rally tyre. We have just been running road tyre, but have got a set of 10" rally tyres to try soon. Running road tyres we have still been winning outright, beating VL commodores, VH V8 commie, Mazda 323 turbo, mazda rotary and the likes, all these are running rally tyres!! The MINI is currently leading the Tas autocross championship, YEA!! My twin brother navigates around the country and a couple of years ago he competed in the Begonia rally (vic) and rang me to say a mini van was competing, 10" rally tyres, disks, was quick too!!
