recently got a halfcut from brickworx (cheers steve) and on the auto selector is has park,reverse,neutral,1,2,3 and drive. are auto rovers 3 speed? im planning on using a old school selector (with the 1,2,3,4) has anybody else done this? also does anybody know what diff ratio a 97 efi auto rover should have? cheers |

ok so the auto in a old mini, had reverse, drive 1,2,3,4. true or false, if you left it in fourth and stopped it would stay in fourth, so when you went to take off in fourth (apart from slugging about it would burn out the auto trannie etc) so whats the deal with the newer rover/metro type selector? where is the 4th gear selector? |

well in the old minimatic i believe 4th is identical to drive the owners manual goes into detail about how to drive the matic transmission. |

 yeah i hope i have good luck with it aswell. the oil showing on the dipstick looks brandnew, hopefully that helps

Hi, Early autos (Mini-Matic) have RN1234D. 80's ex UK/Japan Minis have RN123D. Somewhere around 1989 Park was added giving PRN123D. If you put an auto in 1,2,3 (or 4 on an early car) it will stay in that gear, evn if you come to a stop. If you put it in D it will change automatically. Unfortunately you can't lock a later Auto (without the 4 position) in 4th. It is possible to use the early RN1234D shifter on the PRN123D box, since it has the same number of shifter positions. Simply adjust by the book, change the labels for the shifter positions and it usually works! The only caveat is you may have to file the D position out a little at the bottom to allow enough throw to get into Drive. If you cant get fully into Drive it will take off in 3rd and be very sluggish! Cheers, |

No worries. Yep, I transplanted a 1990 A+ 1275 Auto with Park into my Moke. Then engine came without a shifter, so I briefly used a Mini Matic one until I got the correct one (with Park) from Brickworx. I also know another couple of guys who are into Autos, so I leant a lot from them. IMHO the Autobox is highly underrated. Sure you lose a bit of power at the wheels, but it's nice to be able stick it in D when you are just cruising or choose to manually shift for fun.

the halfcut i have has a shifter (the later type metro'ish one), the old type selector looks heaps better though in my opinion. sounds like a interesting moke, have you posted pics of it? |

Hi, The Metro type shifter is teh one I have. I preferred the look of it to the early one.
Maybe a B&M shifter could be used, but I've never seen one with enough shift positions. All the ones I've seen have been PRND21 (three speed box) or PRNDL (two speed powerglide etc). Some pics of my Moke at: http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18069 Cheers, |

Its just a matter of dressing up the original stick and housing to make it look like a B&M. Have planned this for my roadster many moons ago..... |
