What are people paying for a replacement for the oil pipe from the block to the filter? I've seen all types from Bling metal braided with pretty colour ends to plain rubber with metal ends. What is better and is the additional cost over plain rubber justified?

No, it's just a pipe as far as I'm concerned. I dunno why pay more than you have to for the short bit of metal pipe they came with.

Why the change from the original metal line to the filter anyway? Are you using a remote filter?

I use Pirtek 1/2" 500psi hydraulic hose, and re-useable barb fittings. This hose is used normally for hydraulic return lines- it's nice and flexible, unlike the crimped steel braided high pressure stuff.
End fittings are 1/2" BSP flare, same as S oil cooler hoses.

Costs about $40-$50 from memory for the hose, end fittings and 2 adaptors.

Because on a performance engine, the banjo pipe is a restriction to oil flow. Thus saith a well-known Mini engine builder in Sydney.

Ahhh, I see. I've never had an engine that puts out that much power to date unfortunately...

The functionality lies in the diameter of the pipe and the unions at each end. Braided may offer some physical protection as well, but I doubt you would need it. I'd say rubber will do what you need (if it is up to the task chemically).
