any minis older than this on getting around? I heard early mini had problems with the welds cracking on the rims. Pity about the single leading cylinder brakes. New car.

How sure is he of the age ? Need to see the lower part of the seat frames and a few other things to see if it's really early and also the body number to verify it's age . Have a look in the members mini gallery , someones just posted pic's of a very early 850 , it's got the early post mount seats for reference .

Very early Minis had very thin wheel centres, about 1.6mm, rivetted. They were replaced ~1962? by the later thicker ones, which were still rivetted. Spot welding came in later, around 1964 I think.
The problem with early ones isn't the rivets- it's the wheel nuts tear through the wheel centre. I know this `coz I was a passenger in my mate's old 850, we completely lost a wheel.
