Post subject:  Rear Engine / Hand Brake

I have a car with a mini engine and subframe assembly in the rear.
All is well except I need to sort out a mechanicaly operated hand brake.
I can fit Cooper S disks or mini drum brakes on the rear, but need to incorporate the hand brake.
Anyone aware of a disk brake caliper with hand brake that may fit the mini uprights?
I want to stick with the 10 inch wheels as I have a set of Dunlop mags.
Any ideas???

What's your car ? I'm (slowly :? ) rebuilding the fang below in the sig , my plan is to modify a rear brake backing plate by enlarging the hole in the middle so the drive shaft fits and bolting it on the front hub (now at the rear) . I haven't been able to find any calipers that fit in order to fit discs at the back though after reading Hanra's Honda brake conversion a while ago it would be possibel to use other callipers with an adapter plate on drum hubs . I have some Toyota Corolla Seca callipers for future use for this but am working out the rear backing plates onto front hubs first . Not sure if Morris Minor rear backing plates can be modified easier though as I believe tehy used the same size drum .

If the question is about the mechanics of making a handbrake work on disks then a hydraulic handbrake is the go. Fairly common conversion amongst motorkanarist's and mini rallyists years ago. I believe there are still a few cars about with that conversion.

The car is a twin engine mini, or twini mini.
I have currently fitted rear backing plates to the hub by turning out the centre hole.
I can use the standard cable, however it runs up and down, not front to back, because the backing plate is at 90 degrees.
I think the original 850 backing plate would do the same job.
Hydraulic handbrake would be easy, however I don't belive this would pass the engineers as it is not independent.

Have a look at discs on trailers particularly small wheeled boat trailers.

A hydraulic handbrake is not legal for road use.
You must have a mechanically locking system and hydraulics do not pass.

Okay meant to add "cable operated" disc brakes on trailers.

OK , sounds fun . Fangs when new had the rear backing plate mounted like I described .

I might have some calipers here that bolt onto a mini upright.
and have the handbrake mechanism built in
all depends on the size of your rotors

What are they Steve ? If there's something available for a reasonable price (I.e, not billet competition only stuff) I could be tempted to go 4 wheel discs earlier than intended .....

these are off a Honda CRX, just about any honda with rear disks from '88 onwards has the same ones.

very nice pad coverage over a mini 7.5" rotor, and has plenty of room under a stock Cooper S rim as you can see

I was quoted $33 each from a wreckers in Melbourne
