Okay, I have a dilemma that I'm hoping I can get some opinions on here....

My car is pale green and in desperate need of a paint job, but instead of painting him the same colour, I really want to paint him Lavender with a white roof... my boyfriend, who is a mechanic and an old hand at restoring cars (mostly Holdens and Chevs) says I shouldn't, that I should keep old Ringo in his original colour.... I know people get suss when buying a car that's been repainted another colour but I have no intention of ever selling him, ever!!

So what do you think? Should I keep him green or go for the lavender?

Keep it the correct colour green when you respray it. An old 850 which is staying standard should retain it's correct colour, both for preservation of the car, and value. Thats just my opinion.

That's exactly what my boyfriend said, but I really REALLY want to paint it lavender, then it'll match my Danelectro guitar and a pair of boots that I have.....matching car, boots and guitar!! :D how kool would that be?!

I do understand that keeping him the original colour is the best idea though.... I just think he'd look so CUTE in purple... :(

It's your car girl - you do what YOU want.

The points for keeping it original are all based on value if you sell it, which you state is not the intended outcome. Take all advice on board by all means but in the end it's your choice.

So I look at it this way, make a note of the original green colour and lock that away somwhere so that IF you ever decide to sell it AND if you want to make a bit more money on the sale at that time, then just respray it back to original then.

In the mean time - go for it!

my 20c worth: painting it the original colour will only make it worth more if the entire car is being completely restored to its 'factory original' glory. in most cases people restore the cars to good condition rather than (necessarily) original spec, and in those cases i don't believe the colour will make much difference to value so long as it looks nice...
anyway my cooper s is Ford monza red (to me having something Ford on the car makes it worth more anyway  )

who cares what it will be worth in the future, cars are not ment to be assests like shares or real estate, there ment to be loved and enjoyed (driven) and should look exactly like you want, if you like bright green paint or just normal white, red, black then do it, its all upto you. The car should represent you not the next owner :)

I couldn't car less if a car is the original colour as long as it looks good, do what you want not what someone tells you, as others have said it's your car after all.

Plus, almost all Mini people modify their minis in some way or another - custom, rally replica or whatever. So in modifying your mini, you're doing nothing more than what people always do with a mini.

Would have to agree with 13sec on that one totally............... u don't really see someone spend bucketload on a resto only to sell it a short time later.

Do it Mini Skirt. and do it YOUR way :P
