Post subject:  split pin and Clutch PEDAL ...HELP.....
How the bloode hell, do you get the split pin into the pin that goes through the top of the clutch pedal that goes into the arm that goes through the firewall.

Hope that makes sense

I got the Pin into the bracket after about 5 hours of swearing and cursing and there aint no skin on the back of my right hand, now I got to get the split pin in so it doesn't fall out. There has got to be an easy way, so please tell me how.

I can't see nothing all I can feel is the end of the pin with 1 finger, 3 DAYS AND STILL NO JOY.

One of the more joyous jobs on a Mini......

1. Patience 2. very long-nosed pliers 3. If you use the R-shape pins, you don't need to fiddle around trying to spread the ordinary split pins. 4 Practice, but by the time you master it, you will have forgotten how to do it nect time around :lol:

Is the hole in the pin to the let or the right of the pedal.

I have the clutch pin facing to the centre of the car so the pin hole is visible. From there I use long nose pliers and feed the split pin in.

If you have the pin the other way around it aint gonna happen

To get the pin - put a bit of cotton through the pin hole and pull the cotton through the hole in the master. Pull the cotton tight so the pin is pulled against the hole. Using a long flat head screw driver push the pin in whilst adjusting the pedal to make the holes line up. When its all lined up - break the cotton and push the pin in.

Just dont push to hard on the peadl with your hands in there :wink:

I have a pair of the hugely long nosed pliers you can get from super crap, but i used to do it with normal long nose pliers as well.

Other than that I lie on my back with the seat out, and push the clevis pin through the pedal from the outside of the pedal box to inside. It's easier to see the plit pin holes that way. And a strong torch.

I had to get out a completely rusted and fused split pin from a rusted and fused clevis pin sitting in a rusted siezed and fused master cylinder push rod straddling a rusted siezed and fused pedal. And then I had to do it again with the brake pedal... :x

I've seen a mechanics rest thingo that's perfect , it's a long papped board with extendable legs on each end , you take the seat out , lay this across the door opening with one end outside and the other inside the mini and adjust the legs so it's level . Then lie on it's nice , flat , padded surface and put the pin in like mentioned before . No idea where to get them from but a length of pine shelving with some legs cut to size and padding would do the same job :D

I do it with the seat in easy enough..

I kindof lie on my side/back looking up at the pedalbox and work that way..

It's much easier if you have NEW clevis pins.

I am left handed so for the clutch i put the pin through the pedal from the middle then, with pressure applied on the clevis pin pushing it in, i gently push down on the pedal to line the holes up with the clutch arm and with a bit of pedal jiggling it goes in..but you're already up to that..

Then you will find that if you TAP the pedal it will spin the clevis pin around in the assembly so that you can line up the hole horizontally where you will be able to push an R-Clip through with a pair of long nosed pliers..

Works for me :)

Save yourself a lot of frustration, use an R clip instead although it is just as much a pia.

I reckon the R clips are the best!, You can get a good purchase on them with just your thumb, the long nose pliers grab them more accurately, and they are a doddle to remove. But where do they come from?

any of the auto retailers should carry them. Mine I got from a camping supplies shop when I was looking for them for the camper tent poles.

I was fighting with my mini doing this job a few years ago - was taking me hours. Went and got the Mrs and she had it in the right place in a couple of minutes..........small hands are quite good at some jobs :lol:

I've got big bloody hands and stumpy fingers but this is the one job on a mini I've never had trouble with. Just make sure you clean the pin and sand any corosion off it so its nice and smooth, also run a mini file through the holes just to clear them but not enough to actualy take any metal. Then its a breeze (both should pins have their split pin hole ends on the inside where there's space to put them in.

R clips are great but make sure you get a perfect tight fit otherwise it'll pop out and with the vibration there it'll take days for the pin to fall out = no brakes (or clutch).
The R clip if too long can also impact on the bottom of that pocket where they sit when the pedal is pressed and the pin spins and this will push it out (atleast half way).

Gentlemen, thank you so much, I now know to use an R pin and take the seat out and lay on my back, get the wife to do something with her small hands, swear like crazy, and be gentle as I push it in, sound like fun, can't wait to have another go at it. Then I will have a supercrap.....
