A Gilmer drive is a wide toothed belt that is used in place of the v-belt to drive the alternator and water pump. It comes with special pulleys and generally won't fit on a Mini but may fit a Clubman. The idea of fitting a toothed belt is a good one as it should be more efficient than a v-belt. The trouble with the Gilmer is that is it really too wide and probably loses any efficiency advantage. The other problem is that most people fit a Gilmer drive to get the sound of a blower. To do this you must really tighten the belt, this destroys bearings in the alternator & water pump, the first to go will be the alternator generally. There are of course proper toothed belts available for the Mini, I have one fitted from Mini Spares. This doesn't make any noise (as far as I can tell, mind you everything else is pretty noisy) and relatively reliable. It only has a 12mm wide belt, most Gilmers are about 40mm or more. i guess the whine on the binis is just wank and bling i guess it depends on how fast the blower is running so with a smaller pully and more boost it might whine more. |

Would look good, sound good and provide positive non-slip drive but what happens if you run a bearing in an alternator or a water pump (not unheard of!!) and either of them seizes or nips up....what happens to the belt??? (I'm sure it wouldn't be pretty ![]() But...if you are confident with the reliability of both items....well go for it ![]() ![]() |

i guess the whine on the binis is just wank and bling When the SC'er on the rolla was going flat out at 11psi you could REALLY hear it. It would actually drown out the exhaust. |

My SC makes big whine noise when boosting up, I thought that was normal? It sounds cool from outside the car, so I've been told. It's very noisy inside the car, along with the ram tube carby noise it drowns the exhaust out completely. I prefer the turbo spooling noise, but you get what you get. ![]() |

i guess the whine on the binis is just wank and bling By blower I meant ala 14/71 variety, not an oversize air pump that we use on Minis - Go and have a look at a top fuel dragster and you'll see what I mean. The following pic shows a slight helix in the tooth profile to make it stronger with unintentional benefit of less noise. ![]() Daniel |
