Bypass hose is there for a reason- it allows water circulation through the block and head during warmup, before the thermostat opens.
Unless you are going to drill a few 3mm holes in the thermostat, I'd put it back. But don't use the corrugated ones, a short piece of 1/2" heater hose is better and stronger. As used on Cooper S.

People will say "yeah the Metro etc had no bypass". But they had a sandwich plate under the thermostat and plumbing to suit, our old Minis don't.

nah, leave it blocked... I blocked it up on the engine I have in my cooper, and I can't get the bugger to keep warm at all, it's always cold

Haha- so, Simon, it's wearing out at an accelerated rate then. Check the thermostat actually works.

My 1360 has 125HP+, still has a bypass and it sits between 1/4 and 1/2 on the gauge ALWAYS. Radiator is a stock recond Cooper S/Mini Deluxe one.
If a Mini is getting hotter, with or without a bypass hose, you have other problems...

Skssgn,,, you probably have --->either no thermostat at all,,, or it`s stuck open ,,, or your temp gauge under reads ( &/or all of the above)

On the engines that i build i do block off the original bypass hose but i do fit another one from the back of the cyl head (where the heater take off outlet is) & fit a pipe into the top tank of the radiator for the other end of it. It does take a little extra time to warm up (not much tho) but works a treat in helping to even out the distribution of heat across the length of the cyl head & also helps cool things down more efficiently/effectively in stop/start traffic jam situations when pretty much stationary for ages.

if you like your heater fitted & working still too, then run that new bypass hose through the heater (no heater tap tho) & back to the radiator top tank fitting.

Radiator shops should only charge about $5-$10 to fit the pipe

then Bob `s your Aunty
easy-peasy
:-)
