Post subject: | Ride height |
I know this topic has been talked about a bit....i have pictures and i wanted to know if this ride height looks right to everyone. It just looks odd to me the front is really low and the back is really high. Its roughly a 1965 850, it has from what i can tell has shocks on the front and dodgy oil shock in the rear. Any thoughts? ![]() |

Does look a little high ans also the front wheel is turned so its a little difficult..just jet a fat chick to it in the back ![]() You may need to replace the rear helper springs in the rear suspention to tie it down more |

Is it hydro or dry? |

Ahahahah..... Im going to say dry, it has shocks, and i can see rubber cones, and i haven't seen any tubes in the engine bay that would make me think it has hydro. I haven't actually had a chance to get fully under it yet to confirm. Should be this weekend though. Thanks. |

If it doesn't have the pipes in the engine bay, and has shocks, good guess is it's dry. You can change the ride ride by either packing the knuckles with washers to raise it, or file/machine down the trumpets to lower it. Or fit hi-los ![]() If it were me, I'd lower the back a bit but also raise the front to level it out. |

Yeah im considering fitting hi-los, i've read the docos around the forum. Seems a bit difficult, can't help but think i'll get half way through and break something. Is it pretty easy for the novice? She feels like she has a bit of roll in her too, so maybe it might be the go. |

I haven't fitted hilos before since my car is hydro, but it is fairly involved as you'll need to remove the cones, hence you'll need a cone compressor. The problems you'll most likely face are reluctant knuckles that could be rusted in if they haven't been replaced in a while. Assuming you don't stumble across any major problems though it isn't too hard. |

hard to tell from that pic, but the front is too low, its pretty common for the cones to sag at the front though. the back looks stock most people lower their minis a bit. |

Sounds like you won't go wrong with a set of new (or good second hand) cones for the front, and a set of hi-lo's all around... |

It's most likely just saggy cones or worn knuckle joints at the front. The front just has so much more weight over it and it's had 30+ years to wear the cones.. Most minis sit lower at the front, you want it like this too so that when you accellerate it doesn't look like a boat coming out of the water ![]() |

It's good fun when you have over 3 times the original power output of the vehicle, putting your foot down in 2nd and the front going way up. Ahhh, good fun. ![]() PS. I don't think that's an 850 by the way. It has wind up doors (so does mine, but mine has sliding window catchs which are very different). Also I think '64 was the last year of Morris 850s, there were possibly some '65 ones until the change over, maybe, but I am unsure of this. If the suspension is dry (which I am most certain that it is!) then it's probably a Morris Mini Minor, which had an 850 engine (of the 8Y/U/H prefix) rubber suspension, but wind up doors. Is the body prefix YMA2S1 which should be on the ID plate on the firewall, on the drivers side in the engine bay. If so then yes it's an 850, and PM Sports850 the numbers as he's got an 850 register and would be able to approximately let you know when it was built. He was spot on, on my date. July of 1964, which agrees with my old wiper motor and my starter motor. |
