Post subject:  Drum to disc brake conversion
Hello all.
I have a 65, 850. considering converting to disc brakes. these have come up on ebay.

Would these suit, anyone out there done the conversion?

Is it worth it, or would it be best to just get my current drums fixed up.

Yes they will fit and give a significant improvement in braking. You will need to convert to 12" wheels though as they don't fit under 10s.

Bear in mind they will likely need to be refurbished - new ball joints, wheel bearings, maybe CVs, not to mention pads. Luck of the draw with second hand brakes like that, just don't pay too much.

How much would you say is to much? Ballpark.

The conversion is pretty simple. Pop the ball joints and remove the old hubs/drums and replace with the disc brakes. You'll also need to change CV joints as well, which will require pulling your drive shafts out, but that isn't too difficult.

Cost is pretty subjective. Basically, you don't want to run the risk of buying second hand brakes, and reconditioning them at a greater cost than buying new ones. That shouldn't be a problem presuming the hubs & calipers are still in good condition as they are the expensive part. You may have to put a seal kit through the calipers and maybe new pistons. The average sort of price I have seen 8.4s to suit reconditioning is around $500-$600.

Bear in mind that you can import a brand new conversion kit from the UK for somewhere between $1500 and $2000, so make sure you keep your total reco cost below that.

The cost will depend if you want to fit and reco them yourself or pay someone else to do it.

You will also need hoses, and may need to change brake master cylinders. There are no problems getting parts for this though.

sgc: i'd like to see a complete cooper S disc brake conversion kit in australia from England for $1500 - postage costs from England are horridly expensive, then you have duty/import tax.

I just did it.

Mini Spares have a complete, brand new 'S' conversion kit for £468.00. Add approx £170.00 freight, add 10% GST and whatever the import duty is, and at current exchange rates you're looking at a shade over AU$1700. Well within the $1500-$2000 range I quoted above.

Yes, I'll agree that £170 is a lot of money for shipping, but that's for a 4 working day delivery (my recent order arrived in exactly that time) and I challenge you to find a domestic supplier who'll sell you everything in that Mini Spares kit, brand new, for the same money or less, even including GST and import duty from the UK.

hi sgc i do take up your challenge of cooper s disk brakes under $1700(same as minispares/minisport uk kits), it is very achievable as infact the last 3 sets that we have sold have been just under $1600, there are lots of miniplaces(us included) out there that want your business for these bigticket items so just let the fingers do the walking and you may be surprised at how reasonably priced some items are,and if there are any problems with the items you have some recourse in getting them rectified locally(try getting the overseas crowd to send bits that they may have forgot or given incorrectly for you application)

Hey Josh,

Where were you when I was buying from Mini Spares then? :lol: :lol:

I do basically all of my buying these days over the Internet, and without fail, every Australian supplier I could find online either had prices well in excess of the UK, or don't provide prices online, or don't quote for shipping, or have a non-functional online store. The Mini Spares experience was excellent -- thorough information, accurate and extremely competitive prices.

To someone like me, who knows what he needs and is looking at, that's what's important -- I'll pay a small price premium, just make it easy ;) ;)
