Post subject:  Disk brake Question(S)
Hi. I need to redo all the brakes on my car and i have a few question. My car is a clubby with peformence superlite 12x5 and standard wheel arch.

Front, what is the best and easiest way to disk brake. Is disk brake will required spacer? What need to be upgraded? Do i need to change the brake cylinder or brake line? :?

For disk is it better to buy here or overseas. New or second hand?

Rear drum. With the set-up i have do i go for the cooper s drum space 1inch or will this be too much.

I have no idea what i am doing. Please help. :shock:

the best and easiest solution for you, since you have 12" wheels is to buy an 8.4" disk brake front end from the likes of Brickworx or Miniimports.

The setup will slot straight in to your existing car, but you discard your current brakes and steering components entirely, nothing is retained other than the steering rack, driveshafts and suspension arms.

With your rear brakes, you need to change to rear wheel cylinders that are compatible with disk brakes, they have a smaller diameter and disk brakes are not safe without them.

If you don't know what you're doing, get it done professionally by a mini friendly mechanic, asking us on here will lead to confusion and too many people putting in their 2 cents.

What if you buy a second hand front disc set like:

Should you fite new pads and discs or upgrade to 4-6 piston brake kits that are out in the market?

No need to upgrade to larger calipers at all, you will find these to be great stoppers, but if you picked them up in pieces like that, you would need to consider replacing the pads at a minimum, and condition assess the rest.

Myself I would look at least replacing the bearings and the caliper seals before servicing the ball joints. Then I would consider fitting them up.

re: cooper s rear drums. You will just need spacered drums at the rear to bring the track in line with the disks at the front. The Cooper S ones have different slots in them i think, but they're all the same, so dont get conned into paying 'S' tax ;)

Do you really need to? I've never worried about it on either of the cars I've fitted disks to. The front track is wider than the rear as standard anyway.

Isn't there an issue with steering arms here?

I think all aussie steering rack are like the older english "Mk1" with limited lock?

Later UK cars had more lock, and changed the steering arms to suit?

Cerainly Rover sportspack Coopers had a different set up? (13" wheels?)

Anyone want to comment? :?: :?

Use your steering arms(that match your rack)
on the late model disc setup.
this will make it exactly the same as what you have now

Not sure on the rear drums...i think i would like my track difference front to rear to be as little as possible, though im sure you COULD drive without changing them...

The mounting lugs didn't change on the hubs, i'm pretty sure they are all the same?

I know the steering arms changed on the UK cars. All Oz cars had MK1 arms i think.

You only need to change the steering arms to match the rack. Ie most of the guys installing the UK racks into their cars (as most new racks are) need to change the arms to suit.

Changing to a cooper S brake setup shouldn't require anychanges unless the rack is changed?

That's what i've come to learn anyway...?

If you could give me info an what i need to do this (Disk front and spece back) that would be great. Bassicaly i need the car to stop, and the wife force me to go disk at the front ( it's a real shame :D :D :D ) I am not going to do the work myself so need to get all the parts for my mechanic to be able to do the job. As i say in the original post i have 12x5 superlight, need to know about spaceing in fron and in the back

Disc brakes have the same spacing on the front as step drums...
to make your rear look similar, make sure you have step drums(this is not essential though)
rear wheel cylinders are the same between drums and 8.4 discs.
m/cylinder may have to be rekitted(depending on model)
use your steering arms.
that is all you should need
