Grease!

What's the go with grease? I've always simply used a pot of Molybdenum Disulphide grease (black, greasy, messy, persistant, tough) to fill my grease gun as I can use it in wheel bearings, knuckles, swivel joint, the radius arm pivots and for general lubing of pins etcetera.

But as I'm rebuilding the rear wheel hubs, radius arms and front disc brakes on the cooper, I notice on my shelf a pot of lithium grease. This grease is cloured so brightly it wouldn't be out of place as a ice-cream topping, but is apparently good for all manner of hi-pressure applications.

I had always figured that tough grease came in black and had to scrubbed from your hands with a steelo pad to be removed. But that seems to be all changed. Real man grease has been replaced by a more metrosexual lithium variety available in both fuscia and magenta.

So what grease should I use these days, touchy feely pillow-biter lithium, or do I stick to real man's black stuff?

I can't offer much assistance, but I had a bloody good laugh!

I use Lithium grease (EP2) in the gun for all the grease points. I use Castrol LMM molygrease for CV joints, Castrol HTB for wheel bearings.

hey hey! I'm like Kev, though I use LMM (gunmetal grey) in my grease gun for everything, HTB (bright yellow) for wheel bearings and on the kids swings

I love the HTB it even smells nice !!

I've always just used the molygrease for all things in a mini to keep it simple, is there a downside to using molygrease in this manner?

Molygrease is really the only thing to use in CVs, NEVER use normal grease- but years ago I read somewhere that it's not ideal for wheel bearings.
HTB grease is best for those, as it copes with the extra heat produced by disc brakes.

I had a maintenance fitter say the same, but he couldn't explain why so he left it at a disclaimer. All right then, I'll give the LMM a try, and continue to use the molygrease for everything else on the car for the time being.

I keep most grease like the good Doc and Skssgn, but also have a good tub of copper grease on hand. It looks good and smells even better!
