Hi there!

Today I`ve found an interesting 76 Mini from Canada.
It is equiped with the "anti-pollution-device" as can bee seen in this picture:



Can somebody please explain how it exactely works?
I know they were fitted to some australian cars too.

Are there any drawings, informations ´bout the exact function and working-principle of this AP-device?

It's an air pump that pumps fresh air into the exhaust ports to dilute the exhaust emissions so the percentage of pollutants are less even though the engines still producing the same amount of them . Basically it was a way of bending the rules a bit but al it really did was steal power from the motor to drive the pump .

All garage work involves equal measures of enthusiasm, ingenuity and a fair degree of irresponsibility.

Back in the late `70s emissions were measured in % not grammes/mile or whatever. All this thing really did was dilute the exhaust with air, at the expense of some HP. And use more fuel to do it.
Most parts of this so-called emission control system are now NLA, including the air pump. On the remaining cars with it still fitted, many have rendered it non-operational.

From the picture it looks like it is somehow conected to the heating/cooling-system of the car?
Or does the copper-pipe end in the exhaust-port?

I`m still after a drawing (parts-cataloque or something like that). Are there any available? Or more detailed pictures of all the parts involved in the system?

OK here ya go, the arrangement blows air into the 4 ports on front of head, these connect into each ex port just above the valve seat.

I've heard many people claim that by injecting air into the exhaust ports it promotes the further combustion of the unburnt hydrocarbons and makes the exhaust cleaner. Its bollocks, it might help if there was a catalytic converter as well (which there wasn't) it was just a cheat to dilute the exhaust. I've only ever seen one car with a full functioning set of pollution gear.

The head is a slightly different casting with bosses provided for the ports.

I'm sure I'm not the first 21 year old to say this, but does it have supercharging capabilities?

Um...NO. it goes into the EXHAUST ports...
I guess you could spray fuel in there, have a drip-feed afterburner....

Not if you attach it to the exhaust

But maybe:
With the radiator & thermostathousing + the double-belt pulley it`s seemingly a good place/way for a smal supercharger to install (instead of the air-pump)!

No Harley you're not. I explained this to a mate once, very low output, about as effective as sneezing into the carburettor.

Maybe when used on a turbocharger set up it would help increase the boost?

I reckon it would reduce power not boost- it has bugger-all flow capability, never mind pressure...
