Ok now I'm sure when you were kids you did the same thing, pegged a playing card to the fork of your pushbike and when the wheel went round the spokes hit the card and you sounded like a motorbike.

Anyway my 1993 auto Rover Mini is making that noise. When it idles at lights and especially exelarating it sounds as though someone has pegged a playing card to my wheel and I now sound like a motor bike.

Anyway have any idea what that might be? Help needed thanks.

Hey,

Im no mechanic just taking a stab...

Could be sticky valves? You could try some valve stuff that helps get them lubricated (i think). Its available from places like supercheap, repco, autobarn usual car places, i think its like $10.00

Have you checked your oil as well?

Cheers,

Michael.

I'm gonna go with exhaust as well.

The two most common places are the manifold gasket and the gearbox mount. It's very easy for the manifold gasket to develop a hole especially if a couple of bolts have come a bit lose.
Where the exhaust mounts to the gearbox is also a common problem as the welds sometimes crack.

Thanks for all your help. I'm taking it to Link tomorrow. See if they can fix it, seen as it does seem to be the Exhaust as I had a few guys look at it here at work.

I checked for the playing card too, and that youtube video was a pisser, very clever you ausmini people. :D :D :D

Thanks again 8)

Some left-field thoughts -

1. Check the alternator brackets (can produce a rythmic knock when really loose
2. Harmonic balancer - when the rubber perishes and wears, it can make a ticking sound that is more prominent on idle and starts to disappear as the revs get higher
