It has had it.

The power is supplied via the flasher can unless you have been up to strange doings with the electrics (C'mon, 'fess up!).

The load from the light circuit sets the period of the flash, hence it changes cadence to double when one light blows.

They are pretty cheap. Or beg borrow or steal one from a wrecker. Two or three prong, it doesn't really matter.

About $15. I've got a brand new one sitting in the shed in its box - one of the bikes decided to stop blinking, and the unit was making a weird noise, so went and bought one. Then when I got back home thought I had better check the wiring - one of the bullet connections was undone. Mmmm, problem fixed.
Moral of the story - check the easy (and cheap!) things first!

Pull the blinker canister out, connect one pin to a light bulb which is earthed on its other side. Connect the other pin to a +12v. If no result try switching the connections on the two pins. If the light doesnt start blinking - the canister is gone.

The tin can ones use a bimetal strip, you can hear them clicking if working (with load connected). But the later electronic ones you can't.

I don't think you can swap a two pin and a three pin without swapping the wiring about as the X and L terminal are in a different spot.

If it is an early type they do give up the ghost pretty easily. The later electronic ones you can hear ticking, well at least all of my Tridon electronic ones tick - and have a clear casing so you can see them working.

I had been told that the tick-rate on the electronic ones is not based on the load - so that if a light blows, or you connect up a trailer, the ticking rate stays the same. Is this true? I have a couple of Tridon electronic ones and they all tick at a different rate yet are the same part.

You have a dead short across the flasher can. Take a look at your wiring with a multimeter and try again.

Make sure that each wire goes to exactly where it is pictured to go to on the wiring diagram and accept no less until it does so. Do this by measuring the resistance to the end of the wire, but also measure to make sure it is no shorting to ground as well.

They are worth SFA- I'd spend a penny and buy a NEW one. One less thing to worry about.

so when it starts smoking does this mean that the flasher unit is now haddit?

They are built with only so much smoke, once you let a little out, the rest waits to be let out as well.

Go get a new one with a full packing of smoke.

Sparky joke, once it has been shorted and smoke has come out, it is permanently damaged usually with small items like that. Time for another one.
