Hi, Just found out that the engine is shagged in our 72 1100, have the option of putting in a later model 998cc engine with a rod change gearbox. Problem is, the 1100 in the car is a remote change, can these be swapped straight over? Obviously I will need the rods etc, but is it a relatively easy transformation?
any advice appreciated
Thanks

it's not too bad, except you need to make sure you get the floor mounting for the gearchange nice and solid under the floor, and you put on the engine steady on the passenger side of the car - from the thermostat housing to the firewall.

If you put the whole thing in you will need to swap the driveshafts or the diff. Your 1098 has rubber couplings and the rodchanges all have pot joints.
The rodchange gearshift can be fitted but you will need to drill a couple of holes in the floor for the shifter rubber mounts and also modify the big square hole in the floor a little. The mount bracket will need some surgery too.

If your remote gearbox is still working OK, it might be less work to use it instead- just bung the `new' 998 on after cleaning it out.
